Halal food
Re: Halal food
Thank you very much for the link Mike.
Re: Halal food
Coffee,
If you are on facebook you might also like to search for CARE(UK) and Compassion in World Farming. Both have very strong policies on this revoltingly barbaric practice as does the RSPCA.

Re: Halal food
Bearing in mind that an election looms, folk who are passionate about animal welfare might be interested to know that two parties, UKIP & The Greens, have pledged to deal with this issue. No other party has.

Are UKIP still going? I thought after they kicked Kilroy out for being too racist even for them, they kind of folded.

Re: Halal food
I wrote a piece on religious slaughter this week and got a comment via email. The guy had a lot of points (didn't like the way I called religious beliefs ridiculous, for example), but the one I'm mainly interested in is that he claims the science shows Shechita (Jewish slaughter) is actually just as painless as usual slaughter methods.
This is a piece he wrote, I'd appreciate your insights. Although infuriatingly most of the research seems to be behind a paywall.

Re: Halal food
The usual reasons given for religious methods of killing is that it was what was thought to be most painless at the time. However, if their methods are as painless as the modern methods, why do they need separate methods?

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:
1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Re: Halal food
As I understand it, the method of killing is a religious mandate for Jews, otherwise they cannot consume the meat because it's not kosher. If the killing is done correctly, it's supposedly not painful. Although, I'll pass on having a go with that method...Alan H wrote:The usual reasons given for religious methods of killing is that it was what was thought to be most painless at the time. MEPs back proposals to introduce mandatory labelling of ritually slaughtered meat
MEPs have today approved proposals to introduce mandatory labelling of ritually slaughtered meat.
Meat and meat products from animals that have not been stunned before slaughter, i.e. kosher and halal meat, will need to indicate this. Labels will have to read “Meat from slaughter without stunning”.
Keith Porteous Wood, Executive Director of the UK’s National Secular Society, which has been campaigning for MEPs to act on labelling said: “We congratulate the Parliament on voting to give purchasers the information they need to avoid buying meat from animals not stunned before slaughter. Large quantities of such meat are sold to the general public without them knowing.
“While we welcome the progress on labelling, we believe it should be extended to restaurants and canteens.
“We also call for the lifting of the exemption that religious groups enjoy from general animal welfare provisions for animals to be stunned prior to slaughter. The Parliament voted last year to permit member states to lift the exemption if they chose to, and want member states to do so. Animals should not be made to suffer because of centuries-old religious practices. Religious groups in some countries allow pre-stunned meat to be certified as kosher or halal. We hope all European countries will follow their example.”
Amendment 205 of the Proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the provision of food information to consumers was adopted with 326 votes in favour of the amendment, 270 against and 68 abstentions.
The full report (A7-0109/2010) was adopted by 559 votes in favour to 54 against with 32 abstentions.

This ruling is welcome but for me the key issue remains -

Re: Halal food
Bit about halal meat on BBC1's the One Show the other day. More and more halal meat is on sale everywhere with no indication that that is what it is.
A visit to a halal slaughter house explained that animals are stunned. I was surprised as I understood that to be 'real' halal it must not be stunned.
They said it had to killed
1 - facing Mecca
2 - with certain prayers said and
3 - by a Muslim
The practise is growing (for commercial reasons) so we could end up with :
1 - mainly halal meat
2 - slaughter work only available to Muslims
Better warn the unions!

Re: Halal food
I keep reading these stories (lots in the Daily Mail) and I have a question, if there is no indication that it's halal or kosher, then what's the point? The folk that demand halal and kosher won't buy it and will continue to go to specialist outlets.jaywhat

So just what is the point of having this unlabelled "holy" meat in the supermarkets? If indeed they do.

I thought that too but evidently not. On Radio 4 the other day they interviewed a New Zealand lamb producer who informed us that ALL New Zealand lamb is now Halal. I was just thinking that I would no longer buy it when he added -
"And it is all stunned prior to slaughter"
The plot thickens!

Re: Halal food
Just read this link - well, what I could of it as the link keeps crashing.Alan H wrote:Johann Hari: The religious excuse for barbarity
Seems that the RSPCA (and others) are concerned that Kosher and Halal "stunning" is not "stunning" as we in the west would know it. Halal stunning uses a much lower "shock" so much lower that some animal welfare groups claim that it might as well not be done at all.
So I am going to stick my neck out here and state the bleeding obvious. This is the 21st century and the welfare of a dying animal MUST come before some supersticious nonsense. We already have a law that FORBIDS this practice so let us now enforce that law and to hell (sic) with the sensibilities of the religious community.
Re: Halal food
The reason the Muslims give that the animals cant be stunned is that they must be concious so they can hear the mumbo jumbo uttered by the slaughter man.
It begs the question, why cant they recite their nonsense and then stun it?
