My present one? "Support real science", as opposed to creationism or "creation science", that faith-based anti-evolutionary poppycock that religious people are trying to push into the public schools over here.

My avatar (and screen name) come from my favourite film, Ikiru, directed by Akira Kurosawa (the title means "To Live" in Japanese).

The main idea behind the story comes from Tolstoy's short story, "The Death of Ivan Ilyich," though with quite a few differences (Tolstoy's story is far more bleak). The main character of Ikiru is a petty bureaucrat, but when learns he has only a couple months left to live, he begins questioning his life and reasons for living. Many of Kurosawa's films have strong humanist leanings, but this film is my favourite of all of them-- this was a life-changing film for me.

Here's a good article on the film: http://www.criterion.com/current/posts/307

I would very much like to see this film. I didn't see whether it has subtitles.

"What it says in starkly lucid terms is that ‘life’ is meaningless when everything is said and done; at the same time one man’s life can acquire meaning when he undertakes to perform some task that to him is meaningful. What everyone else thinks about that man’s life is utterly beside the point, even ludicrous. The meaning of his life is what he commits the meaning of his life to be. There is nothing else.”
I really, really like this quote and I intend to 'steal' it (with accreditation, of course). I am now on the search for the nearest specialized movie rental place in town...

PS. You aren't giving us some hint here about your current health, are you?

PPS. Wanna start a thread about the last line in the quote?

Oh, no, Marian! My health is good (aside from the occasional back ache and occasional jaw pain-- all from stress at work!)

The Criterion edition is best (being remastered) and its subtitled. Should be easy enough to find in a big city like Toronto. :) I hope you enjoy it...

I had noticed that in your post on another thread! It is really appropriate, and quite pretty. Our snow has all but gone now, and I think I must be the only one in the country who feels sad.

The nice aspect of living here is that, within a distance of 60Km, from 1,600 mt. you come down to 300 mt. on lake Como where you can sail, swim, etc.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Basically because I'm an ornithologist in training. The bird in the avatar is the Acadian Flycatcher, an American bird that I have studied in the past.
