Collectors are sad

Why do people collect stamps? Or thimbles? Or all manner of ornamental frogs? FFS!

What's all about, eh?


Bet nobody on this forum is sad enough to have a collection of anything.

I don't know... I have 1 wheelcahir in the garage, the NHS one I'm sitting in and my new titanium one which is on its way... Does that count as collecting?

I have a lovely collection of dolls in national costume that I add to whenever I visit a new country.

I'm thinking of starting a collection of stuffed penguins.

I don't think collecting is necessarily sad. I have a friend who started collecting stamps when he was seven and now makes quite a reasonable living out of dealing in them!

Three wheelchairs, on the other hand, Titanium?

I have a very large collection of string puppets and smaller collections of other things.

I think I probably am quite sad but, as Nick said, there are degrees of sadness.

I've had many collections over the years. So, I guess I'm not just sad...I'm depressing... But, I know people who are MUCH bigger collectors.

Oh...and my husband has a very ODD collection. He collects Suzuki Samurais, which are kind like JEEPS, for work and pleasure. They get around in these mountains quite well, and they are relatively cheap. He has 7, in good working condition, too.
He REALLY needs to sell some! Luckily, 5 of them are parked on our friends property. If they were here, it would look like we were running a used car lot!

Why does he have 7, Goldie? Is there some difference between them? Does he have one in each colour, perhaps? If so, I understand. Sometimes when I'm buying clothes I can't make up my mind which colour top or jersey to buy so I buy one of each.

As for collections...apart from my clothes, nah! My mother keeps my collection of model aeroplanes to remind her of the happy days when she thought I was going to grow up to be the straight, macho son of her dreams.

No... One we gave to my son and he enters it into competetions. It's all rigged-up for mud bogging.
My husband has one with a small fuel tank in back and tools rigged up to get to hard to reach areas on the job.
2 or 3 are highway ready and get great gas mileage.
One has a snow plow on it...another pulls a mower.
He only just bought the last 2 because they were in great shape and very cheap. He'll probably sell the worse ones of the group and keep about 4 of them. They ARE handy.

My dad used to build model planes...that actually had motors and FLEW!


Oh yea... I collect rocks from wherever I go, and put them around my plants, indoor and out. :nod:

Oh man, I relate to that. You cannot beat me out of a good second hand book shop with a big stick. Last year my wife and I went to the book week thingy in Wigtown. Like feeding chocolates to a pig..

I thought books were more like an addiction than a collection. But "collecting" does sound more dignified.

I collect masks, my favorite are Venetian masks.

Surely there is a difference between collecting books and being obsessed by them? I suspect there is a sort of book collector who only collects and deals, thinking of value, but does not read. The book obsessed, on the other hand, will read them, probably several at a time, maybe with one in each room in the house, and will buy at the car boot sale for what the book is rather than for its value or 'collectability'.

John Fowles wrote a book called The Collector. Scary stuff! :supershock:
