I think for me the first choice is Billy Connolly. I have a fondness for Victoria Wood and French and Saunders.

I've been dredging my memory for sitcoms. Apart from Absolutely Fabulous, I remember really enjoying Roseanne many years ago and of course Friends is a legend.

Anyone else?

Eddie Izzard.
George Carling.
Juliet Sweeney.
Rowan Atkinson.
Generally anybody who mocks religion.

Fawlty Towers can't be bettered in my opinion :D. Absolutely FAbulous was wonderful at first, though the last series was a mistake IMO.

Ricky Gervais and The Office. Loved Monty Python and Fawlty Towers. Enjoy pretty much anything with Jack Dee in it.

I tend to prefer American sitcoms: Friends and Frasier, in particular, but I have fond memories of Sybil (Shepherd) and Ellen (de Generes) as well as Roseanne.

As for stand up, I tend to go for fringe but Lee Evans was the last famous comic to have me creased up.

Funniest I ever saw was Bob Monkhouse at a private dinner. I was sore the next day I had laughed so much. For 40 minutes he had everyone in stitches. Because it wasn't TV he wasn't restricted in his choice of material.

If I hadn't been there I wouldn't have believed it because he was so different to how he appears on TV.

I'd be interested to know what Monkhouse was like when he was not 'restricted'. I thought he always came across as a nice chap - though it's a bit disconcerting to see him doing post-humous adverts - but I never found him all that funny.

I remember seeing him on 'Have I got news for you?' and being surprised how witty he was (and foul mouthed).

I'm finding it hard to pick a favourite comic. Rowan Atkinson is right up there with Mr Bean and Blackadder but for stand up, I'd probably go with Billy Connolly.

I love sketch shows like Little Britain and Catherine Tate, too.

There's nothing wrong with Morcambe and Wise although some of it looks dated now.

I can't let this thread die without giving a mention to Ardal O'Hanlon who doesn't do nearly enough stand up - or if he does, it doesn't get recorded.

OMG - I remember Kevin Turvey! He was brilliant! When I first saw him I thought he was for real.

He must have been Rik Mayall's first comic character to appear on TV.

It was definitely pre Young Ones.

I recall him saying "Kevin's 'ere" and tugging at his ear.

Which probably was funnier visually than me typing it...
