There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Relying on WTO rules after Brexit is working out just fine, isn't it, coffee? Piece of cake. Easiest trade deal in the world. A walk in the park.Brexit: Russia moves to block UK’s vision for world trade
Almost two dozen countries including Russia are attempting to prevent Britain from staying within the World Trade Organisation on terms similar to those it has enjoyed as a member of the European Union.

About 20 members of the WTO, which is based in Geneva, were understood last night to have raised objections to the UK’s post-Brexit trade proposals. As it prepares to become an independent WTO member after leaving the EU in March, Britain has proposed effectively replicating its share of the bloc’s imported goods.

The world trade body has 164 member states and was set up in 1995 as a regulator and somewhere for countries to negotiate deals and settle disputes. British officials have identified what they say is a fair share of EU quotas — limits on the amount of goods which can be traded between members before steep tariffs are introduced — and circulated their plans to WTO members in July.

Members had three months to object to the proposals, giving them until last night. A single objection prevents the WTO from certifying such schedules.

Countries including the United States and New Zealand have expressed concern over the proposals, which are based on Britain’s historical share of EU imports.

The Department for International Trade, led by Liam Fox, insisted yesterday that it was “not uncommon” for members to object after it emerged that Russia had lodged an official objection. A spokeswoman said that there were “well-established processes for dealing with this”. MLex, a news website, reported that Russia had argued Britain’s proposals were inconsistent with its obligations under WTO rules.

David Henig, a former assistant director at the trade department, said: “This is another case of the government being too optimistic. Welcome to trade reality.”

But WTO rules (we were told) is a whizzo idea! UK signals failure of bid for quick Brexit transition at WTO
Britain signaled on Thursday that its attempt to seal terms for its post-Brexit membership of the World Trade Organization by a fast-track procedure had failed, and it must now enter negotiations which are likely to be lengthy.

This followed objections raised by a number of other WTO states, International Trade Minister Liam Fox said.

Britain is a full member of the WTO, but its terms are bound up with those of the European Union, and it needs to have an independent membership document that sets out the terms of its trade after leaving the bloc in March 2019.

Fox had tried to use a rapid “rectification” for a seamless transition, essentially copying and pasting the EU text into a new WTO agreement covering the United Kingdom. Other countries in the 164-member WTO had three months to raise objections, a deadline which passed this week.

“As expected, some trading partners have expressed reservations about our proposed treatment of Tariff Rate Quotas,” Fox said in a written statement to the British parliament, referring to trading rights granted to major agricultural exporters.

Fox did not name the objectors but he will have to switch to “modification” of the British WTO agreement, giving other countries the right to negotiate and demand concessions from London, which could take years.

British Ambassador to the WTO Julian Braithwaite said in a tweet that “a large majority” of WTO members had raised no objection.

If Britain does not satisfy its trading partners, they could launch trade disputes, which could go on for years more.

obviously the leader of UKIP does not know this. Anyway, it does not seem that the ECHR has decreed that we cannot call Mohammed a paedophile. What it decided was that an Austrian court was not violating a woman's human rights by convicting her of insulting the Muslim religion to the detriment of civil peace. Imagine that this was a British court and case. If we were not in the ECHR the woman would still have been convicted; the failing, if was so, of the ECHR was in failing to reverse this decision

hey, coffee, how about this item from the BC:

"Russia seeks to capitalise on Brexit after blocking Liam Fox’s WTO plan."
Russia is among 20 countries that are looking to squeeze a commercial advantage from Brexit after blocking an attempt by the international trade secretary, Liam Fox, to fast-track a World Trade Organization deal on the UK’s terms of trade with the world. Whitehall is now facing “up to two dozen” different negotiations with countries over how much meat and dairy produce will be permitted into the British market and what tariffs the UK will set on imports. The development will pile pressure on the UK’s already strained resources. The Department for International Trade spent more than £1m on recruitment consultants alone in its first year trying to take on experienced trade negotiators, an area that had previously been left entirely to the EU. – Guardian

What I find instructive and amusing is that a premier pro-Brexit organ is now reduced (and at least, unlike Westmonster, it clearly acknowledges this) to reporting stuff which is not exactly favourable to our prospects should Brexit happen. What do you think, coffee?
