There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

People's Vote today:
Wales backs a People’s Vote on the final deal by a margin of 8 points, 44% to 36%, a new YouGov poll has found. In the event that the government fails to strike a deal with the EU, that margin soars to 26 points.

The result is another blow for the government’s botched Brexit strategy, with 82% of respondents saying the process of leaving has been a mess. And who could argue with them? Between the Chequers debacle, the absurd red lines and the increasing risk of no-deal, there’s very little to inspire confidence that Theresa May can pull a rabbit out of the hat and find a palatable deal.

As things stand, Wales, which voted to Leave in 2016, would now prefer to stay in the EU by a narrow margin. For all that May tries to kid us that people are “coming together and uniting behind the opportunities that lie ahead”, it looks like the thing really bringing the country together is a sense that she’s blown it - and that we need a People’s Vote.

TUC boss backs a People’s Vote

Pressure continues to build within the trade union movement in support of a People’s Vote. Yesterday Frances O’Grady, the general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, said that the “people deserve a say” on the UK’s future relationship with the EU. Taking aim at the government’s botched negotiating strategy, she argued that the red lines should have been “protecting the economy, workers’ rights and jobs, as well as the peace process in Northern Ireland”.

Anglo-German fudge?

The German government is backing away from demanding the UK sort out its future relationship with the EU before getting a divorce deal done, Bloomberg reported yesterday. UK negotiators, too, are happy to settle for a vague statement of intent, leaving the tricky business of sorting out what Brexit deal we’ll actually get until after we’ve left - when it would be too late to say we don’t want it. Reuters, however, quotes a German government spokesman saying the administration’s “position is unchanged”.

Any attempt to drag us out without knowing what we’re getting - a blindfold Brexit - would be damaging and dishonest. Fortunately, the people are already cottoning onto the danger, as a YouGov polllast week showed. But there’s still a big risk that the PM, the EU and our MPs will go along with fudge. If they do, the people must have the final word - and they won’t like it.

EU free movement is better way to recruit farm workers

The government is set to test a scheme for seasonal farm labour from non-EU countries to “ensure farmers have access to the seasonal labour they need to remain productive and profitable”. The programme will give visas to 2,500 workers during the transition period, as the UK prepares to end free movement from the EU.

For a government that has consistently talked about the need to end movement of unskilled labour - and tried to sell UK jobseekerson fruit-picking - this is an embarrassing turn of events, especially as it was the prime minister herself who scrapped a similar scheme when Home Secretary. Free movement inside the EU is a simpler, cheaper and easier way to ensure the UK gets the labour it needs, rather than adding heaps of red tape to the process.

It is unworkable, unacceptable to the Tories/UKIP, never mind the EU. It is a fucking catastrophe.

But if it doesn't offer a competitive advantage, coffee, does it:

a) give exaxtly the same as we currently have; or;

b) give a lesser competitive advantage?

If b) how much less and what will be the impact on us?

People's Vote:
Crashing out of the EU with no deal means years more austerity, the Chancellor confirmed yesterday. After a Treasury minister was photographed in Downing Street carrying a briefing on the government’s no-deal contingency plans - “Operation Yellowhammer” - Philip Hammond said that in a no-deal Brexit the government would have to “refocus” priorities. That’s politician speak for cuts.

“No deal” would hammer the economy and hammer tax revenues. Society would face yet more austerity. That would hit the most vulnerable in our society: the poor, the sick and neglected regions. If this isn’t a good reason for Jeremy Corbyn to swing behind a People’s Vote on a hard Tory Brexit, what will be?

… and the chances of “no deal” are high because the talks remain stuck on the Irish border question. The Independent reports the UK is “refusing to table a new plan”. Things are not helped by the British government’s lack of attention to detail, with Northern Ireland secretary Karen Bradley recently admitting that when she was appointed to the job she “didn’t understand some of the deep-seated and deep-rooted issues” in the region.

Tempers are frayed, with Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab telling the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier that the bloc might have to order the Irish government to reinstate the border between the Republic and Northern Ireland, according to The Telegraph.

The risk of an “accidental” no deal was rising as both sides continue to talk past each other, Ivan Rogers, the UK’s former EU ambassador, said in a speech in Dublin yesterday: "There is now, in my view, a higher risk than the markets are currently pricing of a disorderly breakdown in Brexit negotiations, and of our sleepwalking into a major crisis.”

Nobody voted for that two years ago.

You could always try thinking, coffee, rather than continue posting right-wing crap.
Alan Henness

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

:hilarity: :hilarity: :hilarity:
The proposals, hatched by Conservative MPs, could resolve the deadlock over the Irish border.

The plan would see EU staff manning UK ports in the way that UK officials are present at French ports in Calais, allowing them to check goods and avoiding a hard border in Ireland.

A Tory source told The Sun: “Ireland is key to everything and we’re keen to show it’s not a problem. This is essentially reversing Le Touquet.

yep, and also irrelevant? And, like most of coffee's posts here, cursed by a triviality which indicates the barrenness of the Brexit cause. There were rules on funding of the opposing sides in the 2016 referendum, but why should there be a problem about funding for some other initiative, such as a new referendum? If I were super-rich I might fund all sorts of things. Maybe no-one should be able to use money to fund causes, but this is not the world in which we live, and rich people often fund causes which some of us on the Left might endorse, not to mention charities. Life is complicated, but the Leave campaign tries to make complex things simple

That's a good point, animist. The Brexiteers posts, articles, etc are trivialities and frequently dismissive and personal attacks and never focus on the bigger issue that they are fucking us all up.
