Latest post of the previous page:

Today's People's Vote email:
Is the UK stockpiling food in case there’s no Brexit deal? Will the M26 be turned, at least in part, into a lorry park to cope with delays at Dover? Dominic Raab refused to confirm or deny either on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show yesterday, calling them “selective snippets” and saying they were “unhelpful”.

Just how many “selective snippets” do we need before the Brexit secretary is honest about the whole, terrible picture of a no-deal Brexit?

Raab also said it was “irresponsible” for the EU to warn that the rights of UK citizens living in the rest of the union would be up in the air if we crash out with no deal. Surely what would be irresponsible is to crash out with no deal.

More unhelpful snippets made the news today:
  • “Civil unrest” within two weeks is part of Amazon’s contingency planning, according to The Times.
  • Food safety controls could be suspended to prevent perishable goods getting delayed at UK borders, reports the i newspaper. A possible side effect of that could be the EU refusing to accept our food exports.
  • Our farming sector could also be seriously hit by any extra tariffs arising from no deal, with warnings that this would be “catastrophic” for Welsh farmers ahead of the Royal Welsh Show this week.
https://www.open-britain.co.uk/r?u=https%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2Fz4hWRpcCPT&e=7258668eab9c2d9ccad238fc304d70d7&utm_source=in&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=23_jul_2018&n=9

It’s worth remembering that the government’s own analysis on a no-deal scenario, leaked to the Sunday Times last month, involved food shortages in some parts of the country within two days, hospitals running out of medicine in two weeks, fuel shortages and the Port of Dover collapsing on “day one”. And that was only the second-worst-case scenario.

Other things at risk include the open border in Ireland, the ability of planes to fly between the UK and the rest of Europe, and the rights of EU citizens in the UK - the legal basis for all of which could disappear overnight.

Raab keeps trailing his “technical notices” on no deal, expected to be sent to the public and businesses over the summer. They need to be frank about the chaos Theresa May’s botched Brexit is inviting upon this country.

Yes, prime minister - you should get on with it

“The clock is ticking - let’s get on with it,” says Theresa May. That’s rich coming from a prime minister who has been kicking the can on Brexit for months now in a bid to keep her warring party together.

On that she has failed. Boris Johnson tore apart her Chequers plan in his resignation speech in the Commons last week. David Davis, the other big Cabinet quitter, urged the whole Brexit plan to be “reset” in a damning interview in the Sunday Express. On the pro-European wing of the Conservative party, Dominic Grieve has warned of the turmoil in his party.

May hasn’t got the people behind her either. A poll for the Sunday Times revealed only 11% would support her Brexit plan.
Quote of the day

“I mean frankly a second vote has democratic downsides. It has difficulties. But is it morally justified? I think it is. If you look back at the Leave campaign a great many of the promises they made were fantasy promises. We now know they’re not going to be met.”

John Major on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show

Women’s rights at risk

Women’s rights are under threat from Brexit, finds a new report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Brexit could mean any future equality and human rights protections under the EU are not binding in UK law, the report says. Existing rights may also be removed. This could include hard-won employment rights, but also things like funding for women’s services.

If women (or men, for that matter) are concerned that these protections are being put at risk, then they have every right to call for a People’s Vote to make sure the final Brexit deal is one that respects them.

Equivalence is not equivalent

The EU has rejected the prime minister’s proposals for how our financial services industry should get access to its market after Brexit, according to the FT. Michel Barnier told ministers from the other 27 countries on Friday that the plan “would violate the principle that access rights to the bloc’s financial services market are a gift from Brussels that can be freely withdrawn.”

The complicated proposals are based on the idea that the EU and UK would work together to try to ensure their financial services regulations are “equivalent” so allowing some access to each other’s markets. They mark a retreat from the government’s previous “mutual recognition” plan - which, in turn, marked a retreat from the current “passporting” arrangement where our vast financial services industry has full access to the EU market.

Financial services produce £72 billion in tax, about one ninth of total government revenue. Brexit will damage this industry, meaning less money for the NHS and other public services.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

my take on this thread. Coffee started it as a sort of defiant antidote to all the Remoaner stuff from Alan H and me on the other Brexit thread, saturating BNFB with rather trivial and dubious newsy stuff (and I am of course biased) from the likes of Westmonster. Alan's counter-attack was to saturate it with negative stuff about Brexit. Coffee's counter-counter-attack is a lot of laughs. Am I wrong?

Today's email from People's Vote:
Women’s voices need to be heard as the country makes a decision which will affect us all for generations to come. That’s why we’re launching the Women for a People’s Vote campaign today - demanding the public, and especially the 51% who are women, get a say on whatever Brexit emerges from Theresa May’s mess.

Brexit may be unfolding under a female prime minister but she is failing to represent the 58% of women that want a People’s Vote on the final deal.

From the NHS and wages, to household budgets and education - all are threatened by a Brexit which is being negotiated and planned by an overwhelmingly male group of politicians and civil servants. Four of the five ministers at the Department for Exiting the EU are men, with only one, junior, female minster. What’s more, the UK negotiating team for Brexit is only 11% female.

A rotten Brexit deal - or worse, no deal at all - could also overturn hard-won freedoms and rights, which a generation of UK women rely upon. Hardline Brextremists are dying to strip back equal pay legislation, anti-harassment laws, anti-discrimination legislation and other social rights under the cover of a “bonfire” of EU red tape.

So while the ins and outs of the arguments between the Great Men of Brexit might be great fun for the newspapers, their inability to compromise or empathise is incredibly serious for women.

The Royal College of Nursing, who are hosting our launch event this morning, and the Royal College of Midwives have both warned that a Brexit deal which threatens the rights of EU nurses and midwives to work in the UK could have a massive impact on the NHS.

And the British Medical Association has described Brexit as a “disastrous act of national self-harm.”

Of course we all use the NHS but in many families it is still disproportionately women who are carers to both older and younger generations; the ones who take on the job of taking the kids to the GPs surgery or who rely most on the nurses and midwives who will be most affected by a poor Brexit deal.

Then there is the cost of living. Brexit is hitting women’s pockets already, and the trend is only set to get worse. Inflation is rising faster and wage growth has slowed since the Brexit vote. That hits women, who already earn nearly 10% less than men, disproportionately harder.

Brexit means that the average woman’s pay will be 65p an hour lower than it would have been otherwise, which translates to about £1,250 a year for those who work full time. And while wages squeeze at one end, prices are rising at the other.

These may be small sums to men like Jacob Rees-Mogg, whose country estate and city investment fund will insulate him from the the Brexit slowdown he is so cheerfully inflicting on the rest of us, but to worried mums and working women throughout the UK it is yet another blow.

But this does not have to be a done deal. By supporting a People’s Vote on the final deal women can take back control of the agenda and ensure that a largely male driven process doesn’t leave them high and dry.

Today from People's Vote:
With Theresa May holding her first Cabinet meeting after MPs’ summer break, it’s looking like a warzone in the Conservative party, and the prime minister’s miserable Chequers proposal is under fire from all sides.

Number 10 batted away another vitriolic attack column from Boris Johnson in the Telegraph yesterday, in which the erstwhile foreign secretary claimed Chequers would mean we’re still in the EU taxi but now “locked in the boot”. A spokesperson for the PM dismissed Johnson’s diatribe, saying there were “no new ideas in his article to respond to”. Nevertheless, the pro-Brexit press are pitching it as another sign of an imminent leadership challenge from the former Vote Leave frontman.

Meanwhile Jacob Rees-Mogg, ringleader of the Tory Brextremists, has been meeting Michel Barnier in Brussels. He claims he and the EU’s “extraordinarily charming” chief negotiator bonded over their shared assessment that May’s offer was “complete rubbish”. Could the sheer awfulness of Chequers be helping forge Brexit’s most unlikely bromance?

The pro-European wing of her party is proving no more amenable towards the prime minister’s proposal. May’s former education secretary, Justine Greening, told the BBC’s World At One that Chequers was now “more unpopular with the British people than the poll tax” and government shouldn’t be wasting two vital months pursuing it. Greening’s comments are backed up by a new survey for pro-Brexit group Global Britain, showing that three-quarters of voters in the Conservatives' 44 most marginal seats are "dissatisfied" with how the government is handling Brexit.

Of course none of these Conservative bigwigs will actually be at the Cabinet meeting today. May’s ministers remain supportive of her strategy, though how fulsome that support is isn’t clear. Take home secretary, and reluctant Remain-backer, Sajid Javid’s non-committal comments yesterday. “Right now, this is a plan that has been put forward by the UK government, and it is still being considered by all the different bits that make up the EU. Let’s see what they say.”

It is now 26 months since the referendum – and the Tories still don’t have a clue what to do. The prime minister’s Chequers’ proposal is virtually dead. But those who brought us Brexit - neither Boris Johnson nor Michael Gove - haven’t got a viable plan either, as was explored by InFacts yesterday. The only sensible solution is to ask the people if they are still willing to stomach this blind Brexit.

Quote of the day

“Chequers is now dead and there’s no point having a government spending two vital months working on that when what it needs to do is start working on an alternative route for us.

“The Chequers deal is now more unpopular with the British people than the poll tax was and that is why it’s untenable to take forward.”
