To be honest, on past evidence, I don't really think Davies was ever a good judge of anything to do with Brexit.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Anyway, back in the real world. People's Vote email today:
Boris Johnson may say that the Brexit “dream” is dying but if we want a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal we will need a further massive push.

Johnson’s resignation - and the chaos in government - brings a People’s Vote nearer. The public has already noticed that the government is mishandling the Brexit talks. With the man who sold this pup to the public two years ago quitting the Cabinet, voters will know that something really bad is going on.

The former foreign secretary is right that Theresa May’s proposals would turn us into a “colony”. This won’t please patriotic pro-Europeans any more than extremist Brexiters. The case for us to have a vote on the final deal is unanswerable.

The prime minister’s proposals won’t even protect 80% of our economy, services. But the former foreign secretary doesn’t have any viable alternative. Crashing out of the EU with no deal at all would be madness.

The turmoil in government is not over, even though it looks like May is hanging onto power for now. She seems to have headed off a leadership challenge at a meeting of the Tory backbench 1922 committee last night. There aren’t many voices in media calling for her head either, though Charles Moore in The Telegraph asks plaintively: “Is anyone brave enough to sign her death warrant?”

Meanwhile, the resignations and reshuffle probably leave the prime minister’s Brexit policy pretty much unchanged. The Times, though, is reporting that her White Paper spelling out the detail, previously promised for Thursday, will be delayed until next week - so who knows. The new Cabinet meets this morning.

What is clear, and where Johnson again is right, is that “this is our opening bid… before the other side has made its counter-offer.” The prime minister will need to capitulate further on her red lines to get a deal - including paying money into the EU’s budget - and that will provoke further convulsions within the Tory party.

With Labour making it increasingly clear it will vote against whatever deal May brings back, the chance that Parliament will torpedo it is going up. In those circumstances, the democratic option will be to ask the people what they want.

“I can only regret that the idea of Brexit has not left with Davis and Johnson. But who knows?”

- Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, reacts to Boris Johnson's departure
Look who's back

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Nigel Farage is threatening a “return” to politics - has he ever really been away? - unless Brexit gets “back on track”. Describing May's Chequers car crash as a “betrayal” that “must be reversed”, Farage wrote that he would have to “seriously consider putting my name forward to return as UKIP leader”. As momentum builds for a People’s Vote on the final deal, perhaps Farage regrets telling the world in January that he was “reaching the point of thinking that we should have a second referendum on EU membership”.

Odds shorten on People's Vote

Farage is right to be concerned. The chances of a People's Vote have been rising since the start of the year. In January, we saw a “surge” in bets on such a vote at 5/1, which translates to a roughly 17% chance. Today, SkyBet odds imply a roughly 27% chance of a People's Vote before the end of 2019.

People's Vote petition storms through 200,000 mark

Yesterday we told you our petition demanding a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal was just 1,400 signatures short of the 200,000 mark. The public responded magnificently. We’ve left that figure in the dust, storming past 210,000. Now we are driving to 250,000. Share this link with friends and family, pester them until they sign, and then get them to share it too. Every signature helps us make the case for a People’s Vote. Brexit is too important to leave to the politicians. Let’s keep up the momentum.

Here's something from the Brexiteer's second most loved right-wing shite rag: GRUB STASH PLAN Ministers draw up secret plans to stockpile processed food in case of a ‘no deal’ Brexit
At last week’s Chequers summit, Brexiteer ministers demanded more be done to prepare for Britain leaving the EU out without a new arrangement in place.

The Sun can reveal that includes emergency measures to keep Britain’s massive food and drinks industry afloat - including stockpiling ahead of exit day on 29 March next year.

More than £22 billion worth of processed food and drinks are imported in to the UK - 97 per cent from the EU - in an industry that keeps 400,000 workers employed in the UK.

Similar stockpiles are also being prepared for medical supplies amid fears of chaos at British ports next year.
Is this what we voted for? Who will be worst hit by all of this unnecessary crap? Not the Tories.

People's Vote:
Part of the justification for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal is new facts have emerged. One of the biggest new facts is that Donald Trump is president of America. During the referendum two years ago, we didn’t know he would be sitting in the White House. We didn’t know he would be tearing up the international order.

Trump is today arriving in Brussels for a Nato summit before heading to the UK, which he said yesterday was in “turmoil”. He added that it was “up to the people” to decide whether Theresa May should stay in power. While all this is true, it is an unwarranted interference in our internal politics. The US president said he may also squeeze in a meeting with his “friend” Boris Johnson.

The geopolitical basis for Brexit was that the UK would stride the world arm-in-arm with America. This was always fanciful. Trump’s presidency makes it totally bankrupt for five reasons:
  • He is undermining Nato, the bedrock of our defence.
  • He is too soft on Russia’s Vladimir Putin, who is a threat to our safety.
  • We don’t share his sexist, racist values.
  • He has launched a global trade war that could damage our prosperity.
  • He is putting the planet at risk by pulling out of the Paris climate change pact.
As part of the EU, we are able to protect ourselves from Trump’s worst ravages. Quitting the EU would put us at the mercy of an erratic bully. We would be so desperate to do a trade deal with him that we might end up opening up the NHS to US health care companies, something Trump wants.

We knew none of this two years ago. The people have a right to ask whether it makes sense to burn our bridges with Europe in order to suck up to Trump’s America.

Tom Watson: Never say never to People's Vote

With Parliament lacking a clear majority for any form of Brexit, Deputy Leader Tom Watson said that even though he’d prefer a “meaningful vote in Parliament”, and even though it was “highly, highly, highly unlikely we will support a People’s Vote”, the option wasn’t “off the table”. If Parliament can’t make a decision, quite a high chance given the turmoil in the Tory party, Labour may call for it to be made by the people.

Quote of the day

“Dear America, appreciate your allies, after all you don’t have that many”

- Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, sends a message to Trump ahead of the NATO summit
Javid's negotiations

The Conservative civil war rumbles on; with two vice-chairs of the party quitting and Jacob Rees-Mogg taking pot-shots at the prime minister in The Sun. Even relatively well-behaved ministers aren’t quite with the programme. Asked if he’d like to scrap May’s flagship net migration target, Home Secretary Sajid Javid could only manage a smile and a “next question”.

The main attraction of Javid’s appearance in front of the Home Affairs Select Committee was a set of somewhat contradictory answers on post-Brexit immigration. The Home Secretary said that free movement would “totally” end and that the UK would not give automatically EU citizens “preferential rights” to live and work in Britain, before noting that a suitable EU trade deal could see the bloc win concessions on this point. So what is the government’s migration policy? We won’t get a White Paper on that until October, 28 months after the referendum. Talk about time-wasting.

Ministers planning to stockpile food

In a further sign that everything is going really really well, ministers are drawing up “secret plans to stockpile processed food” in the event of a no deal Brexit, according to The Sun. Theresa May has ordered planning for this outcome to “step up”, with stockpiles for medical supplies also being prepared. Perhaps the best preparation would be setting in place a process for a People’s Vote on whether we’d really want to go through with such a Brexit.

James O'Brien Ridicules The Sun's Brexit Stockpile Story Line By Line
The Sun had a story today that Britain is stockpiling tinned food to show the EU we are serious about leaving without a deal. James O'Brien ridiculed the story line by line.

Their report read: "Theresa May has ordered “no deal” planning to step up - with the government poised to start unveiling some of the 300 contingency measures in the coming weeks."

But James went through each sentence to explain why that is clearly not good news.

One particular sentence in the article read: "The Sun can reveal that includes emergency measures to keep Britain's massive food and drinks industry afloat."

James re-wrote that with what it actually means: "The Sun can reveal that a no-deal Brexit would threaten the survival of Britain's massive food and drinks industry."

He added: "How can people write these things so dishonestly? It's quite spectacular. How can they write an article pretending this is good news?

"This is literally about the entire nation stockpiling spam and Um Bongo because the freeflow of goods, 97% of which comes from the European Union, is going to be compromised and possibly curtailed."

2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

More Brits are in favour of Trump’s UK visit than against. As with Brexit don’t mistake the noisy rabble as being representative of public opinion.

Hey! Coffee. Any idea how we got from 'there is no downside to Brexit' to 'stockpile canned food now' to survive?
