ATHEIST PRESIDENT IN SPAIN!!!

#1 Post by Manel » June 3rd, 2018, 11:38 am

Hello, everyone!

The new spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, declared his atheism four years ago.

He said: "I am an atheist, and I think that religion should not be in schools, it must be in churches. Schools should educate in citizenship, not in religious beliefs. That's for the private sector."

Things are going to be very difficult for him now, and he won't be able to change anything about this in the next months, but at least we can say that we have an openly atheist president. It feels great!

Cheers!

Hey! Great news, Manel!

Times are clearly difficult in Spain at the moment: what plans does Sanchez have and does he have enough support?
Alan Henness

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Only god knows! :D
There are no clear plans, and whatever he tries to do will be terribly difficult.

Thanks for your answer!

As Spain's new prime minister, whose party only has a quarter of the seats in parliament, he now has to decide who to include in his cabinet and is expected to name them next week, (reports the BBC)...
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-44340879
Mr Sánchez, who is an atheist, took the oath to protect the constitution without a bible or crucifix - a first in Spain's modern history.
He plans to see out the remaining two years of the parliamentary term.
The Socialist leader won the support of six other parties to remove Mr Rajoy over a massive corruption scandal.
Unquote.

I think he has 84 out of 350 deputies (seats) in the house (so 24%) and is hoping for support from Catalan and Basque nationalist parties.

Thanks to Manel and friends there is now a humanist as well as an atheist organisation in Spain. Apparently there are a number of humanist orgs in Spain but they are usually formed by Brits.

It is interesting to note that the Monarch is head of the Spanish state but there is a 'President of the Government'...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_of_Spain
..sometimes misleadingly called "the Spanish President", is the first minister and is elected by the Congress of Deputies. He is informally but internationally and commonly referred to as the "Prime Minister". The current holder is Pedro Sánchez. He appoints a number of vice-presidents ordered numerically according to rank and responsible for their respective major ministries such as Finance, Foreign affairs, Domestic administration, etc.
