"Juliet's cleanliness was next to godliness, which was to say it was erratic, past all understanding and was seldom seen."

"Unseen Academicals" by Terry Pratchett:

Ooops, shoulda done a search!

Ah, found a "Favourite quotations" thread, my idea here was not quite the same. This way anyone can offer as many quotes, from any source, as they like. Anything from serious to stupid, Kant to kids, books to Beatles.

I haven't got any title, I'm Botany.
Plain Mr Botany, B.

From 'Bad Sir Brian Botany' AA Milne. I think it's in 'Now we are six'. Most of my favourite quotes can be found there. And most of the wisdom of the world is therein contained. (If you're a simpleton like me!)

One for some (so-called) social media dwellers:
“True happiness
Consists not in the multitude of friends,
But in the worth and choice.”

And one for forgetful old farts like me:

Confucius said:
The reason that I have such an interest in this website is because of Mariah's article on the Golden Rule. I believe that the Golden Rule (including both versions "Do" and "Don't") are the only laws of morality necessary. All the others, especially the Ten Commandments, are just hog-wash! Confucius formulated his Golden Rule more than 5 Centuries befor Jesus taught it. I would like to give you some more gems of wisdom from Confucius:
1--Don't do to others what you wouldn't want them to do to you. (The "Don't version" of the Golden Rule)
2--Our greatest glory is not to never fall, but to get up every time we fall.
3--A man who has commited a mistake and doesn't correct it is committing another mistake.
4--Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.
5--It is better to light one small candle than to curse the darkness.
6--To know what is right and not do it is the worst cowardice.
7--Animals kill to satisfy their hunger, men kill to satisfy their greed. (I put some oomph into it)
8--Great men know what is moral, midgets know what is profitable. (The way Oscar Wilde put it is: "The cynic knows the price of everything but the value of nothing.")
9--Virtue does not stand alone, it will have neighbors.
10--No vice is small enough to be committable, no virtue is small enough to be neglectable.
11--Consideration for others is the basis of a good society.
However, don't think that Confucius was always right. He thought that women were inferior to men, he wouldn't take any female students. He was not anti feudal, he thought that feudalism could be moralized and reformed.

The Bible is just a book of fairy tales.
I don't believe in a personal God. Nature is God and the Laws of Nature are his Bible. (Einstein wrote a chapter in this "Bible" entitled "The theory of Relativity".)
Only 2 things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not so sure of the former.
Imagination is more important than knowledge.
I have no special talent, I'm just passionately curious.
Gravitation can not be responsible for people falling in love.
What is relativity? When sitting next to a pretty girl, one hour seems like a minute. When sitting on a hot stove, one minute seems like an hour!
Look out for gravity waves. (Gravity waves were finally observed a couple of months ago, 100 years after Einstein predicted them.)
Nothing that I can do will change the structure of the universe. But maybe, by raising my voice, I can help the greatest of all causes: Good will among men and peace on Earth!

Hi Animist,
Where did Adam's sons get their wives? Maybe they had incest with Eve?

Thomas Jefferson said:
”We hold these truths to be self evident: All men were created equal!"
In his draft of the Constitution he abolished slavery. But it was deleted by the majority who feared that the southern States might secede.
"We should build a wall between Church and government!"
"Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty."

to paraphrase Richard Wilson in "One Foot in the Grave" (maybe this is before your time), "You won't believe this!". Anyway, I was on a fundie Xian forum for several years, and this question did come up. Somehow, incest was OK before some point in Jewish history, when it became not OK. God moves in mysterious ways, and we have to know all of these in order to escape his wrath :)

In case I have not said it before, my favourite quote is that of great Englishman Samuel Johnson: "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel". I think I will be saying this a lot as the insane Brexit engine chunters on

Hi Animist,
In the Holey Bible you will find at least a dozen instances of incest. Besides Adam's sons' you have the Noah gang of 8 repopulating the whole world. Lot being raped by his daughters, etc. God condones incest but murders gays. The problem with incest is that it reduces the quality of the progeny. God did it on purpose to make more fools to worship him!
As for Patriotism, it depends on who you're patriotic to. Before the "Revolt in the Colonies" Americans were patriotic to the King of England.

The Christian Church, their God, their Bible, their Messiah, etc. were swiped from the Jews. Judaism is the mother of Christianity. But they don't give any thanks. On the contrary they often practise antisemitism!

Xianity is a Judaist heresy, but - like treason no longer being treason if it succeeds (there is a famous quotation to this effect - maybe you could recover it?) - heresies which become the dominant faith are no longer heresies

this is quite a good one, especially if you get involved with religious people who claim that it's a plus point for religious belief if it makes you happy. It comes from the philosopher John Stuart Mill, in his book "Utilitarianism": "It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. And if the fool, or the pig, is of a different opinion, it is only because they only know their own side of the question."

Another good one in arguments is Hanlon's Razor, which I have just learnt from Alan H: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" or "Don't assume bad intentions over neglect and misunderstanding."
