Gays and Avon!

#1 Post by jaywhat » April 19th, 2012, 2:48 pm

Recent message from AllOut.org

Avon, one of the largest cosmetic companies in the world, sells blush and lipstick to millions. We just found out that besides makeup, Avon ladies (and men) in Brazil are also forced to sell books by a notorious anti-gay minister named Silas Malafaia.

Why is Avon, a company applauded for its diversity, providing a megaphone to a man the Brazilian government recently called out for inciting violence against gays?

Avon's brand new global CEO, Sherilyn S. McCoy, just isn't paying attention. But if she hears from thousands of us now, she will understand that the reputation of her major brand is at stake. Sign our urgent "MakeUp for Hate" letter to McCoy, and we'll deliver your signatures to her office in NYC next week and ask her to pull Malafaia's books from the Avon catalogue:

Signed and asked @Avon_UK on Twitter about it...

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Ssigned but don't ask me to boycott Avon their 'skin so soft' really does repel midges. The local shops on the West coast sell it by the shed load.

I know that's true on the mainland Val, unfortunately it doesn't work on the Shetland midge (I've tried it) which is a smaller more vicious beasty.

A poem, author unknown (to me)

The midges the midges
I’m no gonna kid ye …
The midges are really the limit.
With teeth like piranhas
They drive you bananas
If you let them get under your simmit [vest]

In 1514, the proud Edward was king
To take Scotland into his care
But he made a U turn
When he reached Bannockburn,
Just a few weeks before Glasgow fair

For the midges let loose …
Aye for King Robert the Bruce.
Straight into the English they tore.
They ran off in tears
And for 600 years
They’ve been blocking the A74

The midges the midges
I’m no gonna kid ye
The midges are really the limit.
With teeth like piranhas
They drive you bananas
If you let them get under your simmit [vest]

Torquil the piper is a giant of a man
With a sporran as long as your arm
And in Oban he’s known
For the sound of his drone
And the pibroch of real highland charm.

They are sighing and sobbin’,
The ladies of Oban
For Torquil is not what he was
Since a midge in Glen Tanter
Got hold of his chanter
And carried it off in his jaws

The midges the midges
I’m no gonna kid ye
The midges are really the limit.
With teeth like piranhas
They drive you bananas
If you let them get under your simmit [vest]

The guy is clearly a slimeball, but I have a niggle about asking people not to sell a particular book, and laying down what is "unacceptable" even though we think it is. IMO, they are on much better ground saying it tarnishes their image. I've signed it though...

I signed too, tho' like you I wondered whether this was justified. Most of the Net stuff on slimy Silas is in Portuguese, so I don't really know what he says.
