It's the old case of screwing the market until it starts losing them money. City councils do it via rents on the shops they own and local business tax. That's one of the reasons Gloucester is dying at the core.

For some strange reason it seems to be able to support seven sports and outdoor shops (but a sports and outdoor hyper-market has recently opened - the old B&Q with cheap prices, a massive range, easy access and a huge car-park to attract the customers.) 12 charity shops at last count, two pound shops, four "gift" shops (like mushrooms, appear over night on temporary leases). Plus four Tescos, one Sainsbury's, one Morrisons (maybe another soon) and one Asda within the city boundaries.

Went for a bus ride to Stroud today. When I left there in 1991 it was dying, rents and rates too high, to many new shops being built, old ones closing up (like Gloucs). It seems to have recovered and I was pleasantly surprised to find most of the interesting old shops had survived. Perhaps there is hope for Gloucs even yet! Many of old shops are now coffee bars and sarnie shops of some kind.

Newquay as lots of surf shops and trendy surf clothing shops and a lot of expensive pubs and clubs. One ot two out of town pubs only and they are expensive. The one that shut was fairly reasonable kept a descent pint and was vey friendly and had a genuine comunity feel about it.

I went to Newquay once, it was wet - outside and in, poured all weekend and we spent all our time waiting for the pubs to open or in them. But that was before it was the Surf Capitol of Britain. (1965 IIRC)

829 More news on the demise of my local. The rent had gone through the roof and it was almost im[possible to make it pay. The land lord who specialises in turning failing pubs around told them were to put the keys and left. There is going to be a manager in temperaraly untill they decide what to do.

I cannot understand the economics of this. Hype up the rent, business too expensive to survive, close the premisses (this is what has happened to many shops and some pubs round here as well.) Do that enough times and whoever owns the place ends up losing a whole segment of their business, if not the whole shebang surely?

The Cross Keys is now a centre for cars for the handicapped. It never went the sports TV or live music route and lost business. Now all the local pubs feature sports TV (or live/loud music) and I don't go out for a drink any more. A few others have gone the restaurant path and frown on those who want a quiet and comfortable pint only, if they have a bar at all.

831 There are one or two proper pubs left I don't mind music in a pub as long as you can order a pint without the use of sign language.

I don't even know what a thumbtack is, Marian!

Oh, a drawing pin. I think I knew really and I prefer thumbtack.

834 Thumbtack is such a good visual of how the thing works too. Isn't it funny how different words mean the same thing? We have two kinds and just to make things difficult, they are both called pushpins.

I always took a drawing-pin to refer to the type with the very large, flat head and a fairly short pin - as was once used to hold drawings on drawing boards. Looking at how it is applied (using the thumb) the American version is slightly more literal maybe. The type you show, Marian, I have also heard called "map pins".

836 Dave, you are correct about the drawing pin. I tried to find a picture of both in the same shot but no luck. I hadn't heard the term map pins but now that you mention it, that makes sense. I wonder if there is a connection between literal meanings of other words/concepts in the US compared to the UK.

Yes - a drawing pin looks and feels more like a thumbtack.

A map tack is for yachting perhaps

I have to add (isn't it amazing how much dialogue one can get out of such a simple, mundane object!) that the "push/map pin" you illustrated, Marian, have the advantage of being removable without risking broken nails, blood poisoning or gouge marks in the wall! Perhaps they would be more accurately called "pull-pins"? :D

Lumps of almost sticky stuff have supplanted pins in many uses, stuff that has many other kinds of uses.

839 Dave, I'm practicing my grasp of the mundane for further conversations, particularly with those who just can't grasp the idea that you can be good without religion. Saves me from brain-ache. How about push pull pins? Lol! Now I'm practicing the new world literal.

Jaywhat, nautical uses and city police maps. Every time I watch a cheesy cop movie, they have one of those boards put up with colored pins showing where the crime is. Do they really use those or is it now GPS co-ordinates?

If the cops aren't using digital projectors and/or digital white boards by now they must be behind the times! I doubt that it has quite got to the stage of the film "Minority Report" but it's a lot easier moving things around in the digital world than it is to rub bits out and re-write them, unpin photos and move them around etc.

There was a documentary on archaeology a year or so back where the archaeologist had something like a giant iPad - a huge, about 60" diagonal, flat screen where she could zoom in and out and scroll by finger gestures, pick things up with a finger and move them etc. . . I want one!

842 Dave, I don't understand about the screen. If the person is an archeologist, what the heck is she using a screen for? Seems mighty unwieldy compared to a trowel....;)

Guess you can scrape a lot more surface area with a 60" screen on edge. On the other hand takes a long time to draw explanatory images for the TV cameras with a trowel . . .
