Latest post of the previous page:

The Cryptic Clues thread might soon fall off the bottom of the page so I'd better hand over to someone else.

Clue : Soldiers given small measure of juice - don't accept it

The answer I had in mind is : REVOLT

Basically it means : they "don't accept it" - i.e. they "revolt"

It's made up from - RE (soldiers - Royal Engineers)
- VOLT = (a small) unit measure of electic potential - "juice" = electricity

Sorry if I seemed to hog the stage too long. Didn't mean to.
Please, someone else have a go - keep it moving along.

you must not apologise for being clever, Pete, you're not hogging anything or preventing anyone else proffering a clue. On this one I got as far as Re (!) but you are very good at getting disparate meanings into your clues (eg juice, which I didn't get).

I thought of a good clue the other day, must try and recall it!

petemster, I'll add my similar input to animist's. Between yourself and Emma we seem to have a couple of champion word puzzle solvers here!

Thankyou, gents, for those reassuring messages.

Here's one to keep it going while I'm at the quiz. I don't know if it's easy or not.

Yes. That's it. Great !

Angel resembles creator, when nothing's left (6) : - - N - E -

It's - FUNDER - from "Angel" or sometimes, "Guardian Angel", a person who provides fiinancial backing
for a play or film etc. - plus, as you say, FOUNDER (creator) after the letter O has left, or has been taken out.

If it was rubbish I don't mind if people say, "Hey Pete, that was a rubbish clue". :laughter:

But, well done in the face of adversity. Your go.

I thought it was an excellent clue. It just took a long time for it to occur to me that "nothing's left" meant O taken away, rather than O remaining, or O to the left of something. But I liked the fact that you took two words with supernatural connotations but used their down-to-earth meanings. :D

In the world of the theatre an "angel" is a person who funds a production.

sounds good to me; an ngo is a body and a moose is a deer (I think), I just did not know that a mongoose was a digger

Well, it digs. But I wasn't sure that it was fair, and I was going to change "digger" to "small carnivorous mammal" if no one got it. But Pete did!

.
Well, a lot of mental effort went into that last one, but we got there in the end.

Which suggests a clue :- With time and energy cerebral activity makes mark (9)

And to avoid all that effort going to waste here are some ideas that I tried out for "Digger finds . . . "

1. Digger finds article with unknown power (5)

2. Digger finds painting with electronic data attached (9)

3. Digger finds sensational item to chronicle (5)

4. Digger finds old monarch - which is something to worry about (6)

5. Digger finds bent bones scattered below (5)

6. Digger finds exotic example of dogrel (6)

7. Digger finds old pound in river (8)

Have fun !

Right, people. I need to make a change to that first clue. Here's the new version :
- With time and energy and cerebral activity, run out to make mark (9) : C - - - - - - - -
Hopefully I've got it right this time.

And for my sins I offer these updates :

1. Digger finds article with unknown power (5) : A - - - -

2. Digger finds painting with electronic data attached (9) : A - - - - - - - -

3. Digger finds sensational item to chronicle (5) : S - - - -

4. Digger finds old monarch - which is something to worry about (6) : F - - - - -

5. Digger finds bent bones scattered below (5) : E - - - -

6. Digger finds exotic example of dogrel (6) : L - - - - -

7. Digger finds old pound in river (8) : F - - - - - - -

think 5 is elbow

much less sure about 4 - could be ferret (fret "about" ER, and ferrets are diggers)

Yes, good. Right both times !

5. Digger finds bent bones scattered below (5) : ELBOW = Anagram of B-E-L-O-W (indicated by"scattered")
- and an elbow is a Digger - digs into ribs etc. Yes ?

4. Digger finds old monarch - which is something to worry about (6) : FERRET - a Digger
- from ER (Edward Rex or, if you prefer Eliz. Regina) with F-R-E-T round "about" it.

Exactly as you say. Well done. :-)

I think I should get rid of this first clue :
- With time and energy and cerebral activity, run out to make mark (9) = CELEBRATE

It's an anagram, indicated by "activity". So - T (time) plus E (energy) plus C-E-R-E-B-R-A-L
except that we need to lose one "R" so we have "run out" = take out R (a run in cricket etc.)
And the whole thing rearranges to make "mark" as in "to mark an anniversary" or "celebrate an anniversary".
O.K. Hiss, Boo, Rubbish. I made a mess of it first time. When I learn to spell properly I'll be better at this game.

And now for the other clues. Here's some extra letters.

1. Digger finds article with unknown power (5) : A - - A -

2. Digger finds painting with electronic data attached (9) : A - - - - A - - -

3. Digger finds sensational item to chronicle (5) : S - - o -

6. Digger finds exotic example of dogrel (6) : L - - - E -

7. Digger finds old pound in river (8) : F - - - o - - -

is no 7 "follower"? A river is a flower, and old pound could be just O(ld ) L(ibra); and a digger is sort of following whatever is sought

I did wonder if 6 was "lodger" even before the "e" appeared; obviously an anagram of dogrel (I had not seen this spelling before but it's OK - of course!), and I suppose a lodger is sort of exotic!
