Van Morrison: who gives a goat's fart?

#1 Post by Nick » March 20th, 2008, 11:39 pm

These posts have been split from the {Greatest rock/pop track of all time thread - admin}

Oh dear. Confession time. I saw John Martyn in Leeds c 1978/9 and was so bored and unimpressed that I actually walked out. I couldn't stand it any longer. I suppose there's no accounting for taste. Judging by the clip, I'd guess you may also be a fan of Van Morrison. I wouldn't walk out of his concerts......but only because I'd never, ever, walk in. Devoid of talent.

Excuse me, must dash :exit:

I am not quite sure who you are referring to as being devoid of talent Nick, John Martyn, Van Morrison or both?

Speaking as a talent-free person myself  I was referring to Van Morrison, but hey! I don't mind them sharing the assessment :D

I'm glad someone besides me will say that. I hear people speak rapturously about the Van's transcendent work, and then one of his songs comes on and it just sounds like a goat fart to me.

I'll hazard a guess that I'm not the only one here who has never heard a goat fart. To help us empathise with you, could you perhaps explain the distinguishing features of a goat fart. How is different from a fart produced by any other member of the animal kingdom?

The goat fart is unique in that it's usually followed by a bleat. The two sounds combine to form the essence of Mr. Morrison's vocal work.

Doesn't sound unique to me. My husband does a sort of bleat (of triumph) after he farts. Doesn't bring Van Morrison's singing to mind though.

My fart/bleat combination sounds more like James Brown.

This thread has devolved. And I think it's my fault...

Sorry, didn't mean to cause a split. Who knew goat farts were so powerful?

Sincerely,

London might stink a bit but not usually of manure, I don't think.

The man who sounds like a goat's fart is on BBC4 at the minute - it's on til 23.30 UK time - and I must say he sounds pretty good to me.

I'm thinking of buying a goat of my own, now.

I hope you treat it better than that pig in your av, Doug. Anyway, thanks for the tip-off' - I caught most of Van the Man. Lifelinking might like to watch the programme that's on BBC4 now. But I won't mention it's name in cases he misses it and is gutted when he finds out.

(OK - I'll give you a clue: it involves a very young and glamorous character and a strange middle-aged man who calls her 'Mrs Peel').

What for, exactly?
Alan Henness

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?
