I did a brief tongue in cheek summary on FB after a trip to London
Paris has rotisserie chicken at 7am and The Louvre, New York desperately wants everyone to "have a nice day", Beijing has mental fireworks, Hong Kong has cuttlefish pancakes and Disney World, Manila has the most colourful Jeepneys known to man, Madrid has jambon baguettes, and cheap red plonk for a euro whilst you watch street performers at night, Seville has fantastic graffiti art, Oporto has waiters who all look like Colin Farrell and will have you believe you are the only woman in the world they want to sleep with...ever, Bangkok has fab street food and tremendous downpours, Seim Reap has incredible temples and such shy people, Tokyo so clean, so many restaurants, Kyoto, so pretty...London has a doomsday man who rattled his placard at me and bellowed "are YOU one of the sinners?" (how could he tell?) and a big blue cock in Trafalgar Square
But to be honest I don't think I could choose. Some trips have been tougher than others but each place has it's own charm. Cambodia was one of my easiest Asian trips, primarily because I had my daughter with me who had just had some work done on her knee, so I didn't rough it as much as I normally would have, plus the people are so gentle and helpful. I spent a week in a grass hut on an island with no ATMs, electricity only when generators were run in the evening, with the most beautiful white sand beaches, bio-luminescent waters every night, and an internal jungle to explore, and of course Angkor is well worth a visit if you do the tour in reverse, we had the early temples to ourselves, but then there was this...

The first picture is Sakurajima erupting in Kagoshima Province, Japan. It made the news over here. I missed the initial large eruption by 48 hours, I was so cross! Rushed back as soon as I heard. The second picture is me, after I rushed down to the harbour an hour after checking in to my hostel. Covered in ash, within minutes.

I live for moments like those

Good pictures - you do look suitably worried! Obviously someone was cool enough to take the picture.

Haha, no, I'm looking suitably worried because it's a selfie, and it was really difficult to take. That's concentration on my face.

It's always a worry when I have to concentrate...

This seems more of a sociable conversation than a game so I've moved it to the SC.

I think my own answer would be the USSR in 1980. The 4 places I stopped at are now in 3 different countries: Russia (Moscow and Sochi), Ukraine (Kiev) and Georgia (Tblisi). It was seeing a tiny glimpse of what life in the Soviet Union was like that made it interesting - a very bleak but beautiful place. Georgia was my favourite.

Maybe not the most interesting place I've ever visited, but certainly one of the most beautiful.
I've just returned from being on holiday. Whilst away we visited a beautiful tiny little coastal village called Llanngrannog in mid Wales. It's an unspoiled beauty spot - there is only one road in and the same road out - so no passing traffic. An absolutely idyllic place to spend a day - especially if the sun's out (as it was whilst we were there)!

Unlike most Canadians, I have found that my most interesting places have been right here in Canada. Having driven across the country 21 times (5000km from our home to our cottage in NS) I have seen some incredible places. Most of you would have seen pictures of the Rocky Mountains but how about the back woods of Cape Breton Island on the East Coast of Nova Scotia?

Steven's picture above reminds of a Meat Cove, an isolated cove on the very northern tip of Cape Breton Island.

For your entertainment I am including, along with the typical tourist shot, a music video of the drive in to the cove on a rainy day. Be sure to look up from the road when you are not yelling "turn, turn!"
The photo is not the prettiest but best shows the isolation of the area. The video is an amateur one.

There are actually roads in the Forest of Dean, very old natural forest, near Gloucester that look very like that, trees as far as the eye can see - but you can't see far for the trees!

Guess your Canuck roads might be a tad longer and wider and the hills a trifle higher though! And we might have a few more buildings on the way . ..

This is not the best bit of road though - there are some really windy (that's as in winding this was and that - but often blasted with moving air as well!) bits that have great slopes above them with many kinds of trees, but a fixed camera would never show these..

Yup Dave. Very similar but less densely populated. When we told friends we had driven to the end of the road beyond Meat Cove they commented that they hoped we had a gun with us! Tough and fairly inbred folks living in that god-forsaken isolation.

Trees? Yup, Canada's got trees....and cows. As we drove across the country we would frequently say to the kids: "Heh kids, cows!" Of course they would roll their eyes as only kids can do.

Bet you get yawns with, "Hey look, another wheat field!" as well.

Heehee. We would leave Calgary at 2PM and drive directly to Thunder Bay...26 hrs straight. The kids would be asleep from Moose Jaw eastward and miss much of the beauty of the prairie sky at night. I loved watching the evening thunder storms that you could see from miles away and then the Aurora which was often visible from midnight onwards. Breakfast would be on the side of a Lake in the Lake of the Woods area in Ontario.

An interesting point - the University of Manitoba runs crop research and labels the grain fields just east of Winnipeg as to the type of wheat, rye, oats and barley they are testing. We could compare them and the changes between our Eastbound trip in July and Westbound in August.

Earth is the most interesting place I have visited, in fact, it is the only place I can remember. When I go somewhere else I shall having nothing more to say - or see or hear.

so wheat fields can be interesting no matter how many there are! Your dialogue reminds me that I grew up in the Forest of Dean, mentioned by Dave, and that one of my uncles emigrated from there to Moose Jaw, mentioned by Sel. Cannot think of any particular interesting place I have been - I tend to be an armchair traveller who fantasises about places, one of which is Muscatine, Iowa

I like the name; Iowa is pretty obscure and therefore fantasisable about; but also there are some nice views of the Mississippi river (which is already quite wide even though Iowa is only the second state through which it flows) from Muscatine. And I think I read that there is only one Muscatine in the USA! Oh, and if I ever did visit, I would also visit Davenport, birthplace of Bix Beiderbecke

(presumably he was coming from Davenport - try not to think of the double entendre in the song title, I never do :laughter: )

Candidates include Japan (when I was in the US Navy), Niagara Falls (at 8 and at 38 with wife), Smithsonian in Wash DC.
I haven't been to Europe, Africa, or So. America.
If there isn't a thread for What's the most interesting thing you have done? I might start one.
