Latest post of the previous page:

You know how you hear a new word or phrase for the first time, learn its meaning, then it seems you're hearing it all the time?
I give you: 'to rip someone a new one'.
'He ripped me a new one when he found out', 'I'm gonna rip her a new one over this'.

Whenever I hear it I feel like this :headbang:

Is this the most ridiculous phrase in history? And is it, as I suspect, a recent arrival or have I just been lucky up to now?

Probably been lucky. It must be over a decade since I first heard it.

I try to speak properly and don't like the idea that people's bad language is my education.

Jonny Eve's song voices my views...

But I don't think the language he uses helps the public perception of atheists in general, who seem to have a negative image. It seems odd to me that Jesus and Mo make the point about extraneous words..

but I'm glad some people see the problem. Young people often seem more conscious of 'swear' words like fuck and cunt being unduly avoided. They seem to think the objection is finding them offensive. Young people sometimes seem to use them because they shock. The view seems to be that people shouldn't be shocked by them, or it is a good idea to use them so that they no longer cause any shock effect.

:pointlaugh: I love both the song and the cartoon.

I think there is a place for swear words but that place is to express extreme feelings whether that's anger, shock, pain or whatever. Using them as everyday adjectives or to punctuate every sentence as they often seem to be means they lose their impact.

I don't agree with the often expressed view that using the word 'cunt' as an insult is misogynist just because one of its meanings is female genitals any more than using the word 'bastard' denigrates illegitimate children.

Jolly song. You may also like this one from Frank Turner:

Agreed. When you hit your thumb with a hammer, nothing lessens the pain like a "Fucking shitting bastard hell!"

I don't either, but I try to avoid using it when in the company of those who find it misogynist - unless I think they need to be pissed off :laughter: . Similarly referring to Gove as a bell-end, Jeremy [*]unt as a knob or Trump as a bollock-brain isn't generally misandrist.

Is non-binary binary or non-binary?

Well, it is and it isn't. Are you buying old rope or selling it?

a phrase in itself cannot be anything but itself, so it can't be unitary, binary or any multiple of anything. A phrase is not a proposition, and anyway a binary proposition could be reduced to two linked singular propositions. Lord M, you're spoiling my eczemas :)

Well, I suppose you're right about that, animist. If the truth be told, I was letting off a little steam. The term itself is harmless and indeed useful. Unfortunately, it has become fashionable, and there are those who like to misuse it, throwing it into discussions about where lines should be drawn or theshholds set or conditions laid down. I've heard a fair bit of it recently, and I'm afraid it is casting a cloud over my naturally sunny disposition :D

[ Noun] and or otherwise.
[Adjective] and or otherwise.

Give me strength! Otherwise is an adverb. You can be a witty bugger or not. You can't be a bugger or otherwise, and you can't be witty or otherwise.

one for Ken H. Why are Florida's inhabitants called "Floridians" apparently, not "Floridans"?
