The Theme Song To Your Life

#1 Post by dman » June 30th, 2011, 10:20 pm

Basically, what is the theme song to your life (aka, which songs' lyrics fit your life)

For me, it's easy - Just a Day by Feeder

"All by myself
Cause I don’t want to drag you down
Hold you down
Cause you’re a friend,
I blame myself
I guess you think it’s funny now, funny now"

For me it would have to be "Lovely Day" by Bill Withers..

It just sums up everything about me and my life, especially for the last 15 months...

"When I wake up in the morning, love

and the sun light hurts my eyes

And something without warning, love

bears heavy on my mind.
Then I look at you and the world's alright with me

Just one look at you and I know it's gonna be -"

I just can't imagine not being in love with the person I'm in love with. She's everything to me.
"There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots." - From the film "Top Gun"

I suppose my theme song used to be "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails covered by Johnny Cash.
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
These days I'm in a much better place and I would like to think "One Day Like This" by Elbow is my theme song.
Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see you like
Yeah, lying with me half-awake
Stumbling over what to say
Well, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day

So throw those curtains wide!
One day like this a year'd see me right!

"Too much, too young" by the Specials..... (apart from the 'married' and the 'Welfare State' bit. Although I did get a Student Grant - thanks taxpayers!! I've paid it back with interest by now though......)

***********************

You've done too much
much too young
Now you're married with a kid
when you could be having fun with me

oh no, no gimme no more pickni

You've done too much
much too young
Now you're married with a son
when you should be having fun with me

we don't want, we don't want
we don't want no more pickni

Ain't he cute?
No he ain't
He's just another burden
on the welfare state

You've done too much
much too young
Now you're married with a kid
when you could be having fun with me

no gimme,no gimme,no gimme no more pickni

Call me immature
Call me a poser
I'd love to spread manure in your bed of roses
Don't want to be rich
Don't want to be famous
But I'd really hate to have the same name as you
(you silly moo)

You've done too much
much too young
Now you're married with a kid
when you could be having fun with me

gi we de birth control, we no want no pickni

You've done too much
much too young
Now you're chained to the cooker
making currant buns for tea

oh no, no gimme no more pickni

Ain't you heard of the starving millions
Ain't you heard of contraception
Do you really a program of sterilization
Take control of the population boom
It's in your living room
Keep a generation gap
Try wearing a cap

What's a "pickni" Beki?

Pickni is West Indian patois, from 'piccaninni' (child) in, I believe, a West African language, but I don't know which one.

My song was chosen years ago by my late partner, although she hated it. It is Anydy Fairweather Low with 'Wide-eyed and legless'. She used to say she would have it played at my funeral. Despite this she stuck by me for almost 30 years, so I must have done something right some of the time.

Well, perhaps this one - because life is short!

Hello, I must be going,
I cannot stay, I came to say, I must be going.
I'm glad I came, but just the same I must be going.
La La.

For my sake you must stay.
If you should go away,
You'd spoil this party I am throwing.

I'll stay a week or two,
I'll stay the summer thru,
But I am telling you,
I must be going.

Before you go,
Will you oblige us,
And tell us of your deeds so glowing?

I'll do anything you say,
In fact I'll even stay!

Good!

But I must be going.

(Hello, I must be going - sung by Groucho Marx in Animal Crackers)

Been thinking about this a wee bit more - and realised that the Specials was really me as a teenager. I then went through Gloria Gaynor - yes, THAT one:

I Will Survive
First I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
without you by my side
But I spent so many nights
thinking how you did me wrong
I grew strong
I learned how to carry on
and so you're back
from outer space
I just walked in to find you here
with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed my stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second
you'd be back to bother me

Go on now go walk out the door
just turn around now
'cause you're not welcome anymore
weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
you think I'd crumble
you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I
I will survive
as long as i know how to love
I know I will stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
and I'll survive
I will survive

It took all the strngth I had
not to fall apart
kept trying hard to mend
the pieces of my broken heart
and I spent oh so many nights
just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry
Now I hold my head up high
and you see me
somebody new
I'm not that chained up little person
still in love with you
and so you felt like dropping in
and just expect me to be free
now I'm saving all my loving
for someone who's loving me!

But NOW and thanks in no small part to my wonderful and amazing partner of the last nine years its more Divine Comedy (I LOVE this song...):

Hey, I'm not the type
To say one thing and do another
And if it's all right I'd kind
Of like to be your lover
'Cos when you're with me I can't help but be
So desperately
Uncontrollably Happy!

And hey, I'm not the kind
To fall in love without good reason
And if that's a crime
Then baby I'm committing high treason
'Cos when you're with me
I'm absolutely
And totally
Quite uncontrollably Happy!

And hey, I'm not so blind
That I can't see where we're all going
And it's no fault of mine
If humankind reaps what it is sowing
Just as long as we are together
Forever
I'll never be anything other than Happy!

When I was a student, it used to be Hand in my Pocket by Alanis Morissette:

I'm broke but I'm happy
I'm poor but I'm kind
I'm short but I'm healthy, yeah
I'm high but I'm grounded
I'm sane but I'm overwhelmed
I'm lost but I'm hopeful baby
What it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be fine fine fine
'cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving a high five
I feel drunk but I'm sober
I'm young and I'm underpaid
I'm tired but I'm working, yeah
I care but I'm restless
I'm here but I'm really gone
I'm wrong and I'm sorry baby

What it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be quite alright
'cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is flicking a cigarette
And what it all comes down to
Is that I haven't got it all figured out just yet
'cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving the peace sign
I'm free but I'm focused
I'm green but I'm wise
I'm hard but I'm friendly baby
I'm sad but I'm laughing
I'm brave but I'm chickenshit
I'm sick but I'm pretty baby

And what it all boils down to
Is that no one's really got it figured out just yet
'cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is playing the piano
And what it all comes down to my friends
Is that everything's just fine fine fine
'cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is hailing a taxi cab

But now, the one that most encapsulates most of what I stand for is Imagine by John Lennon:

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

This is what I aspire to; sometimes I don't think I've done too badly. At others, well...?

Outlaws and Dreamers by Dick Gaughan

The days and the hours swiftly turn into seasons
The weeks and the months quickly turn into years
The present is coloured by memories of childhood
Of heartache and happiness laughter and tears

I've flown and I've driven long miles by the million
Through desert and forest and high mountain range
Through pastures of plenty and dark city byways
A life on the move in boat, car and train

Thirty five years of singing and playing
Thirty five years of life on the road
Laughing at tyrants and spitting at despots
I've danced in the footsteps of men like Tom Joad

They've called me an outlaw they've called me a dreamer
They said I would change as I aged and grew old
That the memory would fade of the things I had lived through
That the flash fire of youth would slowly turn cold

But I raise up my glass and drink deep of its flame
To those who have gone who were links in the chain
And I give my soul's promise I give my heart's pledge
To outlaws and dreamers and life at the edge

So here's to the vision that binds us together
That tears down the walls that would keep us apart
And here's to the future where dreams will be honoured
And the fierce flame of freedom that burns in our hearts

The fire is still burning the future's still calling
To follow the dream till the end of my days
Wishing's for fools but dreams are for outlaws
Laughter's for lovers and tears for the brave

I raise up my glass and drink deep of its flame
To those who have gone who were links in the chain
And I give my soul's promise I give my heart's pledge
To outlaws and dreamers and life at the edge
Steve
