What's your favourite hymn?
I bet you clicked on this on thinking wtf is a question like that doing here?
But today I heard Norman Greenbaum's 'Spirit in the Sky', which I've always thought is a badass song in spite of the lyrics and it got me thinking that I always quite liked some hymns even though I've never been religious. Does anyone else like them?
My favourite is 'Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord'.

Re: What's your favourite hymn?
I like lots of hymns but my favourite is one that I never learned as a child: 'How great thou art'. I really don't know why this one was never sung in school assembly when every other hymn was. I think it's got a really nice tune.
I agree about Spirit in the Sky too.

Love "spirit in the sky" I also like "my sweet lord" (George Harrison" But my favorite hymn would have to be "for those in peril on the sea" the chorus is very stirring.

Low in the Grave He Lay, that great Sally Ally thumper with its chorus, Up from the grave he arose, with a mighty triumph o'er his foes...
Carpe diem. Savour every moment.

I rather like the hymn tune SLANE ( " Be Thou my vision").
Interesting version here ( which I've probably posted before) by John Renbourn and Clive Carroll:

And THAXTED ( Holst's Jupiter) is also rather jolly.
Why should God have all the good tunes?

I love Waterson:Carthy's version of "Stars in My Crown", in glorious a cappella open-throated four-part harmony.

There's something about "Jerusalem" that I find very stirring, even though I haven't set foot in England for years
Last year I found these 2 alternative words:
Our fathers’ feet in ancient time
Walked upon England’s mountains green.
They tilled the fields. And many a lamb
Oft was on England’s pastures seen
And as invention grew apace
New towns arose on clouded hills
They fed the poor and healed the sick
Thanks to their dark, productive, mills.
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till fairness reigns and freedom too
In England’s green and pleasant land
Michael Imison
-----------------------------------------
And did those feet in ancient times
Walk upon England’s mountains green?
And was the voice of reason thought
On England’s pleasant pastures seen?
And did the vision grand and high
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England’s green and pleasant land

There is a beautiful version of this played by a brass band (NO WORDS - added bonus!). Can't name it, but I think it is aymerrycan.xman wrote:For Those in Peril

Hymns may and may not be religious!!!I always quite liked some hymns even though I've never been religious.
What about the "Hymn to joy" by Wagner which is also the EU anthem!!!
Among religious hymns I can mention some fine ones of the Baptist Church; "the seed" is what I like the most.

Re: What's your favourite hymn?
tbh I find 'all along the watchtower' much more moving than any hymn.
I would also offer a few words of caution. Come the revolution and the transformation of the world into a secular paradise, anyone who answers yes to the "do you have a favourite hym?" trick question, will be put against a wall and shot! (Unless they are really fit and willing to service me sexually, of course.)

I always quite liked "Lord of the Dance" when I was a child, when I still thought I might possibly believe in a god (please don't shoot me)

It's ok, the revolution is a few months off. You'll know when it happens.LilacHamster wrote:I always quite liked "Lord of the Dance" when I was a child, when I still thought I might possibly believe in a god (please don't shoot me)

That was sung at my first wedding. It all hinges on how you pronounce a word in the last line: recreation or re-creation!

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:
1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Re: What's your favourite hymn?
Dunno if it counts as a hymn, but as a youngster I connected with 'Last Night I had the Strangest Dream'
Lots of people have sung it over the years. This is one version

Re: What's your favourite hymn?
I think the word 'hymn' is most commonly understood to mean a religious song. Dictionaries define it as 'a song of praise, especially to God, but also to a nation'. The EU anthem is translated as 'Ode to Joy'.peneasy wrote:Hymns may and may not be religious!!!I always quite liked some hymns even though I've never been religious.

Nick and Para handy,
Ode or Hymn depending on where you come from but the original title is probably in German, a language I don't know.

Beethoven and not Wagner of course!
