Hi Gregory!

So you weren't named after the pope, then....? I must say, I warming to the idea of being a horned god... Yeah! I think I could do something with that role!

Hello Gregory.

There is an introductions thread in Reception where many of us, including me, have said a bit about ourselves and posted a photo.

Nick, seeing as we've already got God in the forum, I think we need the horned god (ie, the Devil) to balance him. He always had the best lines!

You mean aside from the fact that it's what I use on the other forums I'm on?

Well, it comes from a long ago mispronunciation of my last name. Kids took it to rhyme with 'milk' or 'silk', when it in fact rhymes with 'elk'. So to them, <last>shake rhymed with 'milkshake'. It got revived when I was in the 11th grade and shortened to just Shake, which I've actually grown somewhat fond of. If you saw me IRL and called out, "Hey, Shake!" I'd probably turn around to see who was calling.

God and Satan are in fact both aspects of the same entity. That's the killer of the whole joke thing. In fact, it was actually Satan which came first and invented God in order to confuse humans - who had not yet been invented BTW. Satan's invention of God however was only in his (Satan's) own mind, rather than in objective reality. God on the other hand was created (by Satan) with the power to create actual real stuff.

The "horn" by the way is - ahem - a euphemism. It in fact refers to an entirely different aspect (shall we say) of bodily reality than something sticking out of the Auld Goat's head. Watered down, I believe, by Christians.

Its like "the blood of a virgin" - you know, this has no implications of death or dying about it, although that is how it is usually portrayed (eg: a white robed pagan wearing a goats head wielding a knife in a threatening manner over the throat of a young woman tied down on an alter). It is in fact simply to do with a commonplace reality for young chaste females. Paganism is simply to do with nature, and all the "death" stuff is pure fabrication. In fact it's purely to do with celebrating life - and fertility of course. The Christians made up all the death stuff to frighten folk off, and help convert them to Christianity. Diabolical!

So - now you know!

Only - did I make it all up? And if I did, well, I can, can't I!

EDIT: Sorry - only just realised how badly off-topic this all is. Apologies all. Unfortunately the delete ("X") button has vanished!

I got "Gregory" from the main character in Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" (Gregor Samsa). The story of "Iceson" is a bit more complicated, and it goes to several years back. I may talk about it later. Actually I'll probably change my name to Gregory Iceson when I get to some other country.

It can be confusing...changing your name suddenly. I was previously known here as, Mick, but in a moment of inspired revelation, God showed me my true name and it is,
I Am That I Am.

This happened last night in the Private Club. Speak to God there and who knows what He might reveal to you!

New boy here, sent over from Reception to explain my username.
(I suppose I ought to be grateful that I wasn't sent to the stores for a long stand

:) )

Anyway, it's a portmanteau expression: LM in honour of the undervalued virtue of idleness, and MoG to echo the words of the plain man as the Quality go by.

It's silly, of course, but I've used it on other forums and it's rather grown on me.

Pretty much all my online identities are references to characters I have played in Gilbert & Sullivan operas. Don Alhambra is the Grand Inquisitor of Spain in The Gondoliers, and is my default handle for every forum I'm a member of. Since most of them are atheist/humanist forums, I consider this an unintentional irony. :)

I actually chose this name in 2000, when my Yahoo account was compromised and I needed a new name. I had just "gotten saved" and made a name based on a Christian song I liked -- "Smellin' Coffee" by Chris Rice. The song is about waking up in the morning and finding God's "new mercies". I used the name for a number of years before I deconverted, and grew attached to it. I like the name and I have no plans for changing it. These days it's more about waking up in the morning and realizing that I have another day of promise to live and enjoy.

I chose mine because that's what I am. Not very imaginative I know but it's a little more meaningful than my other one Titus Aduxass

It does indeed. Anywhere that gives a home to the Pitt Rivers AND the Ashmoelian has my vote.

I have this same username at several other places, so I figured for the sake of simplicity I'd keep it here too. Joel is my name, and Wildtree is an anagram of my last name :)
