Re: Why did you choose your particular user name?
Mine is the from a recent film version of The Count of Monte Cristo. It was a name given to Edmond Dantes by the smugglers upon washing ashore after escaping from the Chateau D'If. It allegedly means "driftwood", but I've never found any confirmation of this. It's my online name that I use in several places.

I chose mine because it makes me giggle and it reminds me that so many theologians think they've really studied something of substance when it's really all a load of crap!

I read this in Wikipedia and thought sisyphushappy was a good username for a Humanist:
The Myth of Sisyphus is a philosophical essay by Albert Camus. In the essay, Camus introduces his philosophy of the absurd: man's futile search for meaning, unity and clarity in the face of an unintelligible world devoid of God and eternal truths or values. Does the realization of the absurd require suicide? Camus answers: "No. It requires revolt." He then outlines several approaches to the absurd life. The final chapter compares the absurdity of man's life with the situation of Sisyphus, a figure of Greek mythology who was condemned to repeat forever the same meaningless task of pushing a rock up a mountain, only to see it roll down again. The essay concludes, "The struggle itself...is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

Examine the religious principles which have, in fact, prevailed in the world, and you will scarcely be persuaded that they are anything but sick men's dreams.

Because I know who I am by shining the light of honesty on my inner being, I like a good party from time to time and I will die. Oh and I once owned the banksy that this image is.. I have tagged it with my own graph "do what you love".

Because it probably appeals to my macabre sense of humour. A born pessimist, I have never found myself disappointed with life!
Re: Why did you choose your particular user name?
I always have the hardest time coming up with user names. I went with Albus because I really like the character of Dumbledore from the Harry Potter books.

A good enough reason and better than some I've heard!Albus wrote:I always have the hardest time coming up with user names. I went with Albus because I really like the character of Dumbledore from the Harry Potter books.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:
1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Because I have a distinct lack of imagination!! That and I like people to refer to me with my real name on forms - a little more personal!

Re: Why did you choose your particular user name?
Back when I first started online, I was a bit of a grammar Nazi (I'm now much more of a descriptivist and don't correct spelling or grammar unless it's genuinely difficult to understand). Someone said "who are you, the grammar king?" and it kind of stuck. So I changed my username and I've used variants of it ever since.

My user name is just my first two initials and my last name. I also own the domain where I soon plan to present a portfolio of my photography, design, music, and literature.
It will be the umpteenth time I've redesigned the site. I've been designing since I was 16!

Re: Why did you choose your particular user name?
My username is the state that I am in my life (at least working to be). It comes from the Sanskrit word "nirvaan" (it is difficult to transliterate sanskrit to english) although many people write it as "nirvana" the last "a" does not exist in Sanskrit but it does in some other Indian languages. the "m" added is to give it a South Indian feel and also to end the nirvaan with the "mmmmm" sound of the cosmic syllable aum/om
Nice question though

Re: Why did you choose your particular user name?
An odd choice for an atheist, I know, but Hestia was the Greek goddess of hearth and home. Some of the characteristics attributed to her include gentleness and calmness. Since I'm a social worker and strive to bring caring and calm to each home I enter, the choice seemed appropriate.
Re: Why did you choose your particular user name?
Wow! We have a Goddess on the forum!
Maria! Maria! Is that a first?
I know we had God but I always thought he was a makie uppie.
Seriously, Hestia, I like your thinking.

Emmm...I'm afraid Hestia will have to take second place...Maria is the first goddess, of course! And don't you dare forget that, Lewist!lewist wrote:Wow! We have a Goddess on the forum!

It's Esperanto for "Dogman" (well, "Hundoviro" would be in full.) I rather like dogs, have spent time working in rescue kennels, and often dog-sit Pip the Doberman, the hound in my avatar.
As I am single and working I have never had a dog of my own as it wouldn't be fair. One day...
