Funky Flags
Funky Flags
Leaving aside nationalist feeling and political opinions, I'd like to know what people thinks makes an attractive flag. I like the Union Flag but think the individual components are dull and prefer the Welsh flag to the Saltire etc.
Another flag I like is the South Korean one. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File: ... _Korea.svg
I like its symmetry and colours. It reminds of the kind of thing I used to do at primary school when asked to "make a nice pattern using coloured crayons".
I hate the flag of Mozambique because of the bayonet and putting it over a book doesn't make it any more appealing.

Re: Funky Flags
No Shetland flag on that list, worra cheek! It's the Finland one, but with the colours reversed.
Finland.
For funky I quite like Martinique.

Re: Funky Flags
I know what you mean about the South Korean flag, Thomas. I feel the same about the flag of Macedonia. I wonder what was going on in the head of whoever designed it. I think it's cool.

There are a lot of really ugly flags. Here's one that leapt out at me as a potential migraine-causer:

Yes, but does the picture of four snakes do much to encourage tourism?Alan C. wrote:For funky I quite like Martinique.
I prefer the UN flag.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:
1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Re: Funky Flags
Most flags are divisive and can be also confusing - like George Cross for England - and that daft Union Flag (for what?) that is as likely to be upside down.
I do like the UN flag though.

Re: Funky Flags
I'm afraid both your choices would give me a migraine, Diane.
I find it impossible to put aside politics and just judge flags on their aesthetic appeal. They have an amazing ability to stir emotion both positive and negative. No doubt that's why the Cyprus and the Greece flags make me feel a bit brighter while the Turkish flag - and any flag with a moon and crescent on it - makes my heart sink just a little bit.
If I have to pick one that's 'funky', I'd go for the Seychelles, though I think it might look better as a deckchair cover.

Re: Funky Flags
Whoops - double post.
But anyway I meant to ask if there was a particular reason you started this thread, Thomas?

Re: Funky Flags
Interesting answers, thanks!
Zoe, my grand-daughter was designing a flag for a project at school. She had some interesting ideas, to put it mildly!

Re: Funky Flags
What's the project? The imperialist conquest of foreign lands?
Is anyone else's interest flagging?
Is anyone else's interest flagging?
Re: Funky Flags
LOL! No, it was about creating utopia.
Re: Funky Flags
Aaaah! Nothing too difficult then....
Re: Funky Flags
Referring back to Alan's post...
....especially garlanded with victory laurels....
Hmmm. I'm afraid the circles remind me irresistably of gun-sights. Not the most peaceful image I can think of.....Alan H wrote:

Re: Funky Flags
Most of them are just differently colored stripes. I like the ones that are different, like the South Korean one already posted and the Saint Pierre and Miquelon
