Acronyms

#1 Post by Dave B » August 1st, 2011, 5:39 pm

How's about an acronym game?

SHIT - Society for Holistic Infant Therapy

SPIT - Society for the Prevention of Idiotic Therapies

BUGGER - British United Group of Gerontologists Engaged in Research (we need one of these!)

[Later - OK, just remembered there is another "acronym" game - but this is slightly different.]

:laughter:

When working for a company making units that had to undergo a thorough climatic workout we attached an unofficial label to them if they died during the process:

F. U. C. T.

for Failed Under Conditions of Test

Then a miserable boss with a sense of humour bypass told us not to do it.

When they started reorganising the colleges in Sunderland and Newcastle, it is said that they came up with the name City University of Newcastle on Tyne. It was noticed and changed before the opening date, but all manner of stationery and notices had to be scrapped at immense cost.

It seems that at one time the most senior officer in charge of the WRNS was called the Chief Officer, Women's Royal Naval Service (she not allowed to be called an Admiral, or even an Admiraless). This was, of course, abbreviated to C.O.W. in common parlance.

This being deemed insubordination they changed her title to Senior Officer, Women's Royal Naval Service.

[This is possibly apocryphal - but I like it!]

Another possibly apocryphal one:

In the 1970s, there was in some government department an Extractive Industries Environmental Information Officer by the name of McDonald.

My late mother in law and I founded the anti-vegetable pressure group Society for the Abolition of Vegetables from the English Diet.
Membership is now down to one. Anybody fancy joining?

Maybe you should ask Big Mama if SAVED could have a nice Special Interest Group section..... :D

Talking of vegetables, I am an ideal candidate for membership of SPUD: The Society for the Protection of the Unreasonably Dumped.
