Our very own countdown thread!

Otherwise known as the Games Room, think of this as a subforum of the social club reserved just for sociable icebreaker games. Beware - they can be addictive!

As this thread has something to do with counting, I thought I'd post here to announce that this is (extraodinarily!) my 5,000th post on TH (besides several hundred PM's). If you had told me 3-and-a-bit years ago that that would be the case, I'd have been very surprised and somewhat sceptical.

However, here we are! So I'd like to take the opportunity to thank Maria and Alan for setting up this forum to promote humanism, to thank them and all my fellow posters for the fun and education I have received from it, for allowing me the opportunity to explore (and share) my own views on a whole variety of topics, and perhaps most importantly, to say thanks for the friendships I have made with fellow posters, whom I would otherwise never have met.

3 cheers for everyone!

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

5,000 posts? Where do you find the time to eat and sleep, Nick?

Anyway, since you have reminded us that this thread is about counting, I thought I would post a bit of mathematical fun.

Try this:

Choose a three-digit number whose first and last digit are different.

Reverse the order of the digits to get a new number.

Take away the smaller of the above two numbers from the larger. The result at this stage usually has three digits. If it's only got two, put a 0 in front of it to make it three digits.

Reverse the order of the digits in the number you've got now, to get another new number.

Add the last two numbers.

Do this a few times, each time choosing a different number to start with.

You should notice something happening.

I'm trying to develop the TH Posters' Diet Programme. So far, it's failing miserably...
Anyway, since you have reminded us that this thread is about counting, I thought I would post a bit of mathematical fun.

Try this: [etc]
I tried it a few times and didn't notice anything (interesting) happening. Have I gone wrong..... :puzzled:

You must have. The steps always lead to the final result 1,089, no matter what number you start with.

Dave, the fact that you seem to be fading away does not excuse you omitting to reduce the number

Nick was our post count carried over from the HSS forum, thus giving us such a high number? I really can't remember.

Bugger.
It's like the old days using Letraset, one could spend infinite care, putting all one's concentration into getting the transfers lined up and correctly spaced. And then find that you have just crafted a perfectly typeset spelling error!

Ah, those were the days (TF they are over!)

In this case I cutted and pasted and forgot to deduct.

Trust you, Alan, to give me something else to worry about. Do you mean to say I might have misplaced my moment to bask in the light of mellow fruitfulness?

Can the Big Mama solve our connundrum? Will she stoop to our level? To quench our parched tongues with the sweet balm of truth...?

I'm not a big rap fan but what you both have written reminded me of a song by K'Naan called "Take a Minute". The first line of the song goes like this:

And any man who knows a thing knows he knows not a damn, damn thing at all...

Here's the video. You've been forewarned about it being rap. The lyrics are quite meaningful. The guy's from Somalia; he's seen his share of difficulties. It's shaped his music and his character.
