Having risen at silly o'clock to go to work (I don't mind, it's time and a half at weekends  ) I've now finished, the Archers omnibus has only just started, laundry is out on the line and when I've finished procrastinating here I'm going to clean windows. A good day so far

And you can all blame me when it rains :D

Yeah, even retired it feels like a "lost" day. There's not even anything I want to listen to on the radio!

Dammit, I will have to do the domestic stuff just to avoid couching all day!

I've been a good boy and written a chapter and a half of my book. Need to do a bit of padding out in places, but more than content with the day's work

I've had a rewarding weekend. Done a lot of geological studies, chores, some other reading that I wanted to do.

What book are you writing, James?

Why are you studying rocks, Daniel? I became interested in geology whilst climbing in the Lake District - some fascinating ores there.

I'm studying for a geology degree with Birkbeck College. The second year, out of four, starts in three weeks' time. I will seek to develop a career in geology when I'm qualified. I find it a fascinating subject.

I find it amazing how you can study an outcrop - say, a volcanic rock - and reconstruct what took just a few hours to happen so many millions of years ago. I mean, a few hours is a timescale that humans can grasp, but having to think about all these millions of years at the same time... That's awesome.

Yes! I used to watch the OU progs; ripples in sandstone, polished pillow lava deposits and all kinds of other fascinating processes. Linked in to palaeontology and you had a pretty good picture of the world of the time.

What happened to 996,527?

This one should be:

996,525

Except that I think we have gone irreparably wrong in the past....

Mea culpa: I 996,529ed when I should have 996,528ed. So you should have been 996,527, Nick. So we were one out and can't go back so Jaywhat jumped one to 996, 526 . . .

Er, yes, I think . . . Image

Now, since you did not sequentially number your last from Jaywhat's, Nick, I have to jump one to 996,523 so that every post has a valid number, even when it does not.

It's time we got this thread moving again, isn't it?

What are people up to this weekend? I'm going to a geology field trip to Hurst Spit, and I'm excited about it. :penguin:

Lotsa stones there, any erratics I wonder?

On an archaeological dig in a cave in N. Wales we were told to look out for "exotics" as the director insisted in calling stones transported into the cave (deposits mainly from glacial moraines except in deepest part of cave.) He refused to call them "erratics". So we compromised amongst ourselves - they became "errotics".

'erratics' was on the real Countdown the other day. Just thought I'd say.

My hardwood floor in the hall and living room is maple, a lovely pale gold colour. Before the flood in the front hall there was an erratic, one short plank in a much darker shade. At first I was a bit annoyed, but I came to like it. The new floor is in many ways much better. It was laid before the skirtings were installed, so the said skirtings are tight against the floor and wall with no gaps to be seen anywhere. The floor is lovely, still in that lovely pale gold but there's no erratic. I miss it.
Carpe diem. Savour every moment.
