Our very own countdown thread!

Thanks. Nobody got me any cake.
Hey Maria, if I'd known, I would have got you a cake last weekend and we would all have sung Happy Saint's Day to you... and you could have blown out candles or something. :)

I've just read the first few posts in this thread.

I looked back at the first posts and wish I hadn't. Thanks a bunch hundovir! We started fucking about with the numbers even then:-

AH repeated 999,993 (a mere admin matter I suppose :laughter: )
Moose jumped from 999,986 to 999,895
then Nick put us 'back on course' wtih 999,982
but blobbed with doubling up at 999,976 (while muttering about being behind schedule :hilarity: )
then moonbean put us right at 999,973
and then I gave up the stupid idea of checking up on stuff because I have better things to do and ....................

I'll try, briefly.
"the other place" is the HSS forum (Humanist society of Scotland) This was a forum set up and paid for by Maria and where many of the posters on this forum got to know each other.
A couple of years ago there was a "schism" which included the police being involved and Maria set up this new forum, the HSS took umbrage at this new forum and everybody that mentioned it was banned from Maria's HSS forum. (I was banned without even mentioning the new forum)
The result is, the NSS now have a barren forum with nobody posting, but we at thinkhumanism continue to go from strength to strength.
Maybe not the best explanation, but if you want to learn more go back to the earliest posts on this forum.
You can't go to the HSS forum to see what took place as I believe they deleted all the posts :puzzled:
Hope this helps.

I also just read the first few pages of the thread and it made me very sad. Life was better then.

Wow, sounds intriguing! Lucky for me, and many other members, that it happened. Otherwise the world wouldn't have a decent Humanist forum like this one. Now all we need is a section like "report from America" for us Yanks and Canadians.

Trying to get back in the swing of things at work after a terrific vacation. I spent my whole day putting out fires.

Ah, well, at least my cats are glad I'm home.

Just to clarify, Ken, my comment was not related to matters to do with the forum but with my personal life which was not good then but in many ways better than now. TH is one of the good things in my life; it was then and is now.

I'm glad to read your positive comment about TH. It is genuinely a good place on the internet. I have met a good proportion of the regular posters now and they are good people both online and in person.

So when can we expect to see your first Letter from America?

You could start a 'Report from .....' thread in, say, Miscellaneous discussions - admin would move it to another place if it felt better there.

Mary has just set off for three weeks in Alaska, so I'm probably going to be a grumpy old bar-steward till she gets back :cross:

Friday she's going halibut fishing (apologies to the vegetarians) But on the whole she's just visiting a friend she worked with at the Sullom Voe oil terminal here in Shetland.
The friend (Morag from Alford) Now works for an oil company in Alaska.
Edited to add.
This is a photo taken in Morags portakabin office, with Morag (I think) in the background, it's not a very good photo.

It may be cr*p having Mary away, Alan, but it'll be good when she comes home again! So don't grump too much. :)

Wow, this sounds a bit like Tolkien's Simarillion! A hidden history/mythology!

It also answers an unspoken question of mine - why so many Scots on this forum? :D
Hope this helps.
Indeed it does. Thank you.

Guess that's Alaska for you - making Sarah Palin the person she is today

Reckon Mary will have some tales to tell on her return - hang on in there Alan :)

It's unlikely to be Morag in the foreground.

My knowledge of Alaska runs to the Iditarod race, Sarah Palin, Northern Exposure (what happened to that?), wolf hunting by helicopter and declining bear numbers (or rising, if you are SP).

Oh! That's more than I first thought!

I hope she has tales to share when she gets back
