I'm sitting here, with the sun shining through the window onto my keyboard, drinking a cup of freshly brewed coffee thinking of all the poor people who had to return to work today.

Nae luck!!

Is that a reference to that festival of rape and pillage you hold up there in the Frozen North every January, featuring big men, burning boats and much debauchery (or so I have been told!)?

Nah, that's not till the third Tuesday in January, but you got the rest about right.

Our house has never really done prezzies, though Mary did buy me an Indian cookbook one anniversary.

Not just yet, see above.

We're only a boat ride away.

Some history.
5/6 January
Auld Yule & Uphalieday Traditional celebrations of Twelfth Night and the Epiphany.
Celebrations varied around the country, from burning evergreen leaves to eating special celebration cakes.
Last Tuesday in January
Up-helly-Aa Another traditional fire-festival, this time of Norse origin, celebrating Shetland’s Nordic heritage. Lerwick hosts masquerades, guising and a full-dress
torchlit procession, culminating in the burning of a Viking galley.

Debauchery is always fun! :)

Wot? No prezzies? Sacrilege. :) No point in having a celebration without suffering from the virus known as the vast consumerism which plagues North America, is there?

That would be a splendid festival to see.

I'm back! The journey was ok till I set off to come home from Joanne's and the road was closed. Oh and our luggage didn't make it with us.

I'm warmly esconced in my neighbours' house across the way. They live abroad and are only here for a couple of months each summer and are glad to let me use the place. My suitcase arrived by courier yesterday evening despite the snow.

My own house is a bit of a disaster; however, the furniture is mainly ok as are my possessions. All the downstairs ceilings will need replaced along with all the flooring, kitchen appliances and various other minor things. I should be devastated but I'm not. This was the house Maureen and I bought together and she loved it; however, it should be reinstated much as it was and will be the same house again with the same furniture so I'm being positive.

Thanks for the kind thoughts, folks!

welcome back, Lewist! Sounds like you've got everything under control. Where would we be without the kindness of neighbours!

I am so glad that your suitcase showed up and that you've somewhere to stay that's cozy. Sorry about the house. You are handling it wonderfully in spite of the hassle. Wish I could be there to help. {{{lewist}}}

I tried to phone you 3 times Lewis, to see if you got home OK but if you're at a neighbors, that'll be why I got the BT answerphone message.
Glad you're home OK anyway.

Delighted you're back, if not exactly home, Lewist :D

When i eventually dig my car out (not used it since 23 dec) and the mountain roads are safe to drive I'll happily come over and gave you a hand if it would help... in the meantime, stay warm and positive

Hi Lewis!

I'm so glad your furniture and possessions are OK. One tends not to have emotional attachment to ceilings, so I guess that's OK too. As the Duke of Wellington once said, news is never as good or as bad as when first reported. At least you now know the score, and the only way from here is up.
