Future power famine due to file archiving?

#1 Postby Dave B » September 7th, 2014, 12:03 pm

On prog on bbc ws an interviewee claimed that, at the current growth in online archiving, by 2020 there will simply not be enough energy to power all the harddrives and servers needed.

Is this an 'in' for the sunny countries to host solar powered data farms with solar powered sattelite links?

Of course, energy shortages are bound to be a problem with our ever increasing demands - just for charging mobiles and tablets!

Come the day when building regs make whole roof solar panel installation mandatory for new builds?
