Great steps in some aspects of autonomic decision/action but I wonder how much is simply following a program. With industrial robots most of the work is done by fixed programs, follow the same actions every time, no possibility of recovering dropped items etc. That is where the new work is being done, critical decision/action choice on error.
Avoiding large infrared emitting bodies is quite easy, what would the greeting robot do if the visitpr simply ignored it? Just stick to the program script? Any black box can do that.
The recent DARPA robotics competition seems to indicate some limits to autonomic action at the moment.
But, each year there seems to be a bit more acheived, all that's needed now is a small but longer lasting power supply and better a smaller and better AI.
