Latest post of the previous page:

1) Certainly not deliberate. The poor whale merely has a terrible Personality Disorder, and needs therapy and understanding, not condemnation. Treatment of whales and imprisonment and ASBO's is a humanist issue!
:laughter:
A couple whose yacht was heavily damaged when a 40-tonne whale jumped onto it face questioning as part of an investigation into whether the creature was being harassed.

Pictures of Sunday's incident appear to show the southern right whale leaping out of the water to crash into the 10m yacht, off the South African coast near Cape Town
(http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/ju ... uestioning)

So you are not so far off the mark . . .

How do you harass a whale in a yacht? With a speed boat - yes. How do you stop a yacht suddenly when you realise you are on a course that will cross that of a whale? Whales are somewhat more manoeuvrable.

I have seen many shots of whales heading for boats, having a good eyeball at them before diving under - maybe using the keel to have a good scratch on the way (much to the consternation of the boats occupants!) So a whale heading for your boat may not be considered unusual by an experienced sailor in those waters.

Whales are reputed to be intelligent and must have good underwater vision. Was this whale too stupid to spot the yacht in time to dive under rather than go for a breach? The video seems to indicate there was a fair time for a change of decision.

So are humans, and humans have accidents.

I dunno. It's possible the whale was:
  • a) simply not looking
    .
  • b) distracted (for example by parasites, or by some predator underwater, such as an orca, or so on)
    .
  • c) aggro, and expected the yacht to get out of its bloody way
    .
  • d) ill (why do whales beach themselves sometimes? Theories abound about illness and parasites and so on)
    .
  • e) dumb (there must be some dumb whales, they can't all be Einstein); perhaps frolicsome and dumb.
I am not sure we can really answer the question. Accidents happen.

Yeah, who can tell. The whale can, but he ain't talking! (Well, not to us anyway, probably complaining to his mates about those stoopid humans who don't know the rules and how he showed them ... ... ...)

I think it was a deliberate act of aggression and the whale got the idea from watching this program.

Everyone needs to be a little deliberate aggro on occasion.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

That's fantastic, Gottard! You are obviously really pleased with it and with justification.
