Re: Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

How about an egg that is the earth. Some material things have value. This dictates if we live or not. Air, water, food. If we don't protect these, what cost? I think I can say with 100% certainty that earth will be hit by a meteor. I think I can push this all the way to a dinosaur extention event. I...

Re: How Do We Know That Life is Not an Illusion?

Yes, that is how I see it. An illusion if you like is an idea that looks like it has a hight probability, but some set of conditions render the though as low probability. If we add more data about a though we can tell its an illusion. Our brains are smart sometimes too smart. We can make stuff up, s...

Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. So, how many baskets do I need? How important are the eggs? How many baskets you can afford? Some eggs are priceless. What cost then is too high? I woke up early this morning and this popped into my head. An individual can answer this question for them self. Ho...

Re: What do you know about theology?

This survey was made up to try and answer this question. 'The claim is that atheists leave Christianity because they don't understand the Bible (theology).' When someone leaves Christianity, the reason they do so is that some set of data has been added to their understanding of the world. This under...

Re: How Do We Know That Life is Not an Illusion?

There still seems to be an argument as to whether or not Albert was an atheist. I think he might say Yes, from what I have read I don't think he would say No. He might say you need to decide for yourself and then offer you data about the world to help you decide. His expert opinion as a physicist a...

Re: What do you know about theology?

Well, I have complete my theology test. I was not allowed to use the internet. This was on the honor system so other than answering the questions I did no research. I was allowed to use the bible. I don't own one. I could have looked up a bible on the internet but then the temptation would be too gr...

Re: How Do We Know That Life is Not an Illusion?

probably I have said this many times already on this forum, but the very notion of life as an illusion is an illusion in itself. For an illusion (an event) to take place requires, conceptually, that there is a reality which disproves the illusion. For life as a whole there can be no reality outside...

Re: How Do We Know That Life is Not an Illusion?

Dyslexia made me do it, rather than cut and paste. That and Alberta is where I spent more of my life. Albert Einstein?! That must be a classic Canadian typo John :laughter: Though I should bow to the great man he often, like the Oracle at Delphi, spoke in riddles. Can't quite untangle that...

Re: How Do We Know That Life is Not an Illusion?

I found these while doing a bit of research. Thought I would share. "Illusion is the first of all pleasures." -- Voltaire "Now he has departed from this strange world a little ahead of me. That means nothing. People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present and...

[Posted before I read Lord Muck oGentry post.] John, you replied, to Lewis: You exist because you have sent me this wonderful gift the post. Aw, come on, surely the fact that you received a post on this forum dies not prove that "Lewis" exists, well, as a person anyway. How do we know that you are n...

Re: How Do We Know That Life is Not an Illusion?

I remember as a child, 5 or 6, eating my peas. Green thing out of a can. I love the real things fresh out of the garden. Not sure what they put in can or tins. As a child and because the darn things were green and mushy, out of a can, I preferred to push them around my plate and wonder, where did pe...

Re: How Do We Know That Life is Not an Illusion?

My the timing was perfect. Sort of.

Illusion in this context, in case my irony is lost, it can be hard to detect, means real to me. :)
(Clarification is for others, I think dave does a good job of detecting my irony and were I have made a mistake.)

Stay safe Dave.

How Do We Know That Life is Not an Illusion?

I would argue that life is an illusion. One played to all our senses. We just can’t tell and there for the question is moot.

The illusion is good enough. Sufficient. Any answer is unknowable.

Religion circumvents this.

It promises that there is something more. With that thought you can do terrible things.

Re: Antihumanist, what does that mean?

How about this. On death or why we live. I become very sad when I contemplate my coming death. I have no idea when this will happen, but is has a probability of unity. It's a certainty. This probability makes life worth living as long as you are getting what you need out of life. I wish I had figure...
