I think I've been on a 'wobble' about all this for some time. My previous position was based on the premise about not having censorship except for the very most extreme cases. I was essentially concerned about the need for artistic and ideological freedom and also because I was so suspicious of (hos...

Firebrand I agree with you on Absolutely Fabulous and Roseanne. I can still remember first watching that early AF episode where blind drunk she falls out of the car and then down the stairs outside her home. I laughed and laughed whilst thinking 'but they cannot show that kind of thing as humour'. A...

Felicia if you re-read my earlier posting I said the same as you - that there are many views on the causes of war. To state that there is one and only one cause is to deny any other view; which in turn is to oppose the open society. I also think that your view ties in exactly with my sentiments in m...

Thanks for posting and sharing this thought-provoking extract. It reminds me of similar material I read many years ago seeking to put ethics into mechanistic and instrumental modes. … and I do think it was a wee bit ungenerous to say that This essay illustrate how issues can be taken to a level that...

Toohey I would repeat the comment by another poster that you seem fixated on making this about Capitalism. That’s a pity because it’s been otherwise a worthwhile discussion. You do seem to have the ‘Marxist religion’ – it’s as much a religion as any of the others that have their fixed beliefs sets a...

The Dalai Lama 'thing' is a Cold War creature created by the aggressive Chinese and usefully exploited to the full by the USA. That amoral moron Bush has latterly latched onto it in a desperate attempt to create some sort of legacy for a presidency that is raidly follwing Blair's premiership into di...

Alan C one of the most significant features of modern industry, both technological and services, is that old boundaries, methods and hierarchy have gone or are going. You simply can no longer make a broad assumption that people going for breaks is somehow 'bad' or inefficient in every sector and org...

Alan C, what you say doesn't affect my contention - this episode is one that can be attributed to inept (or something worse) management... I don't see that this has anything to do with Muslims any more than to do with any worker. If any "worker can just disappear for half an hour at a time, four or ...

No pun intended, but the report on the odinist incident shows all the symptoms of bad faith in reporting and disseminating these matters. I would prefer to see more robust and sceptical consideration of such reports in the vein of 'youll never believe what they're up to now'. I don't see that in thi...

"This is entirely factitious", but he goes on to give his version - so something happened and it was not all "entirely factitious". Then he says "they blew it all out of proportion" - so now it's not "entirely factitious", it's just that it's blown out of proportion. But then he surpasses himself wi...

Alan.c not it wasn't that. It was something fairly current, over the past week or so... even had his unedifying face on it. Of course, articles featuring him aren't exactly something that would hold my attention - hence my memory blank

When I first read this in the Rutherglen Reformer I just did not see it as any big deal. I generally dislike extreme made-up scenarios as much as analogies - mainly because I often find that the constructor of the scenario or analogy asserts that it is just offering a way to test, or find, a truth, but in reality they have their own pre-conceived agenda or conclusion to 'be arrived at'....

On the general point about being 'anti religious'. I don't want to be 'anti' but I don't want to have anything to do with it - or it to have anything to do with me. I find it wearying to have to contend with the endless encroaching and claiming ownership of so much of civic and social life by people...

Sectarianism Hurts our communities - Glasgow Museums talk

Subscribers to TH might like to think about participating in this event. I worry that the well-intentioned opening up of the public debate on the topic of sectarianism is becoming 'owned' by organised religious groups and interests. One consequence of this is the seeming tendency for lots of polite ...

Ted at Play

'Co-production' seems to be all the rage just now. The idea is that someone puts the bones of a concept online with an invite to a peer group to help develop it into a play, short story, film or whatever. I've been a member of the creative writing group in the Tron Theatre over the past two years an...
