Re: Why are we impressed by celebrity?

Is it just me or does he look like a much younger version of Ian McShane in the first photo? I've not heard of him before and never watched Middlemarch.

Re: We are just disposable transport vessels for our DNA

I guess I meant not very scientific or rational, rather than humanist, and there does seem such a huge bias towards that way of thinking on these forums.

Re: Ideological basis for humanist vegetarianism?

Carol J Adams has written several books exploring the links between feminism and vegetarianism and is a good author to refer the meat-eating feminists to if they want to explore the issues. Nice to see you back Rami, I was also banned from Veganforum months ago. I know in my case I probably did dese...

Emma Woolgatherer wrote: "What are we once we've passed on our DNA and ensured that our offspring are fit enough to produce viable offspring of their own? Do we have no significance, no value?" In terms of ensuring our DNA goes on and our offspring and future generations do well, it is ideal that we...

Re: Why are some thoughtful people vegetarian and others not?

Paolo, I'd actually agree with you about cars and the harm they do although it would not be realistic to ban them until public transport is improved a lot in this country. In London it's not so bad but in many rural areas it is non-existent, this is why I would not condemn everyone who uses cars. It...

Re: Why are some thoughtful people vegetarian and others not?

I regard the suffering of animals as a bad enough thing that I believe human liberty should be curtailed to stop the atrocities, so I do not agree with you Paolo that forcing vegetarianism would necessarily be wrong. If we had a majority of people already vegetarian I think it would be quite reasona...

Re: How nerdy are you? (quiz)

67% scored higher (more nerdy),
1% scored the same, and
32% scored lower (less nerdy).

What does this mean? Your nerdiness is:

Not nerdy, but definitely not hip.

Re: Should parents have the right to refuse...

Alan, if making an informed choice and possibly choosing some vaccines in some specific circumstances is "cherry picking", then I am quite happy to cherry pick. I assumed we all did that, even though our individual decisions differ on some vaccines, unless of course you believe it better just to fol...

Re: Should parents have the right to refuse...

Actually given the possibility of side-effects I believe that schools are a totally inappropriate place for anyone to be having vaccinations, even single vaccines. Not only is it posing a danger to the children to have vaccines with lack of adequate medical supervision but also not fair to teachers ...

Ha! Maria, my husband always thinks I find ways to avoid housework, and you know what he is absolutely right! I don't know about this phenomenon or if it exists, but I have heard some other puzzling things I cannot work out the answer to. The main one is when people who claim to remember past lives,...
