Re: The Nightingale Collaboration

Awesome stuff guys, I saw the announcement - it's a great idea and I can't think of anyone better placed to execute it. I hope I'll be able to contribute some time to the collaboration (when I finally have some time available again!)

Re: Ideas for humanism school trips

Not sure if this is still of use for the situation that started the thread, but for future reference there is Down House in Bromley, Darwin's home and natural lab for much of his life. Then there's the Grant Museum in Bloomsbury (although they're shut until next Spring as they move their collections...

Re: Why do most men and women think so differently?

There are physical differences between sexes, including differences in the structure and/or activity patterns of the brain. But there are physical differences between members of the same sex as well. I'm not sure how useful gender segregation is as a mechanism for understanding the cognitive implica...

Re: having a multiple partners

Saying ultimately everything is down to evolution is like saying it's ultimately down to physics; that's true but misleading. No adult of sound mind is a prisoner of evolution, nor is any society. Any person of sound mind can change themselves and their behaviour; any society can change its ethics....

Re: Arguments for the existence of God

Mickeyd, my post was addressing the validity (or otherwise) of your a priori assumptions. Perhaps if you refrained from copy-pasting large tracts of text and going off on a tangent when someone raises an objection to your rationale, it would be easier for us to engage in useful discussion. Keep it s...

Re: Arguments for the existence of God

Sticking to the thread topic, the only arguments for the existence of God (gods) that I have ever seen or heard have either been based on assumptions founded on religious texts (which I do not consider to be a valid source for a variety of reasons, not least because there are so many different texts...

Re: Minimum Pricing on alcohol

45p as a minimum price for a unit is only going to hit the drinkers of really cheap or really strong booze. It will put people off whisky, gin and other spirits (for better or worse) and probably drive the poorest alcoholics to drinking alternatives to 'safe' alcohol, so there will probably be more ...

pps: the ref to natural selection...hopefully it won't be a bait coz we have already spoken about Evolution and it is fairly clear that natural selection is also a pseudo Not going into this in detail again - Natural Selection is a simple process that works at a variety of levels, with interactions...

Re: What is Evil?

Alright...cool, thanks - I didn't know about that. So, then if we look at it on the opposite polarity, there would be a point of maximum temp too? Since all energy together cannot heat up more than a certain temp, just like they cannot be colder than a certain temp? If this is true, then temp is re...

That was what was on the Victorian Pharmacy the other night, wasn't it? I think I saw one at the Wellcome Collection, I assume they just generate a hundred or so volts [---][/---] it'll feel as if the 'doctor' is doing something powerful to you and so enhance the placebo effect. Re: Why time travel may not be possible

The whisky certainly helped . . . Umm, Dave, what whisky did you have? I may need it to understand Paolo's link! In simple terms, quantum entanglement is a relationship between objects that means one reacts to a change in the state of the other at a faster-than-light rate (I think it's at least 10,...

Re: Why time travel may not be possible

A time machine may work, but it would only be able to operate within the time span it had been operational for and it could only transmit information by utilising quantum entanglement.

Transmitting matter through time is implausible at best.

I cannot comment much on this, except to say that if at least some of is true it is horrifying and certainly different from what we in Britain tend to learn - that the British Raj ended suttee and brought some order to the subcontinent. I am really sorry that you feel so hurt and angry about what f...

Re: atheism versus agnosticism

The point I have been trying to make, over and again, is that the person who disbelieves in God has no need to prove his argument; it is up those who claim that their belief in God is true... to back this claim up in some way. I agree with this, although I would say that the person making the claim...
