Re: Why is it okay to not believe in more?

And if the question really is the one about the origin of life (and much depends on how you define "life"), as opposed to the origin of the universe, then again it's perfectly reasonable to say, "nobody knows". And then you can talk about what the theories are. The important thing is to be clear tha...

Re: Why is it okay to not believe in more?

"This is all there is" is not the only atheist position, of course. It's perhaps difficult to defend anyway, because it raises questions about what exactly constitutes "this", and how we know what there is. The best answer to questions about origins is probably just to say, "I don't know". Then you ...

This is quite possibly one of the worst ideas I've ever read.

Just look what happens!

Re: An Issue with Humanism, not an attack just an observation

If we are to take Hitchens' line that religion should be ridiculed etc as an expression of a "banning" mentality, then may we not take the opposite line - that religion should not be ridiculed etc - as an expression of a "banning" mentality too?

Re: Time for the law to tackle discrimination against non-religi

Is anyone aware if this is a UK wide bill or applicable only to England?Wales? http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200809/cmbills/085/voli/09085i.i-ii.html The Bill forms part of the law of England and Wales. It also, with the exception of one clause, forms part of the law of Scotland. There...

If memory serves me correct, the BHA was among those a few years ago, who pubilcly read his poem out to support the cry for the end of the blashemy law. It was 2002. The eleven verses of the poem were read out by eleven speakers: Barry Duke (Freethinker editor), Shirely Dent (Rationalist Associatio...

Re: Are you a humanist or what?

The moment we say we "represent" Humanism and we are fighting for equality of Humanists with all religions, you are immediately distinguishing yourself as a separate community within the human community. Now, is that a founding principle of Humanism? I think there's some playing with words going on...

Not sure about Antony Flew, I think words were put in the mouth of this frail old man. This is Dawkins take on this article. The Turning of an Atheist Richard Dawkins This is one of the most damning pieces of investigative journalism I have read for a long time. Congratulations to Mark Oppenheimer....

Re: A question of (dis)belief

It's a daft comment. Atheists can and do change their minds, it's not like it's unheard of for atheists to become theists. Antony Flew, for example, is now a deist after a lifetime of atheism. We'd say he was mistaken, of course, but the point is that atheism per se is not psychologically set in sto...

Re: Religion' science

I heard a new proposal today apparently supported by the Christians + Muslims(?) with the label "science of religions". Teacher: Well, class, today's subject is "science of religions". Which is a non-sequeteur. Dismissed. :D Well, I dunno, maybe something is lost in translation. If you think of his...

Re: Dawkins on the God of the Old Testament

Alan, a lot of people use this argument and I don't know if I've said this to you in the past, but it's particularly poor. The crux is that Jesus atones for sin, not original sin. Original sin is supposedly washed away at baptism (which is why unbaptised babies go to limbo). For the Christian, it's...

But God is more that just a name. I disagree. I think "God" is just a name. It is a symbol for the authority our moral code must have over us. I disagree. I don't think it is a symbol for any such authority. This idea of what goes around comes around, karma, reap what you sow is very important. I d...

Re: What is secularism?

So, Dan, you are saying that secularism today is more like "give it your own meaning" but use the term since it gives you political mileage. But theoretically secularism is primarily about separation of state and church? No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that the meaning of secularism has ...

Re: What is secularism?

Oh, and (sorry), no secularism is only about religion and the State. A secular (neutral or separationist) State might still be racist.

As far as I know the ending of apartheid in America had nothing whatsoever to do with secularism, but I stand to be corrected.

Re: What is secularism?

Just as an aside, you could say the actively pro-atheist states of the Soviet Union and its satellites were "secular", in so far as religion wasn't involved in the state apparatus (though Stalin did involve the Church at certain junctures), but in the modern sense they weren't secularist because the...

Re: What is secularism?

Greetings to all! I wanted a better understanding of the term "secularism". When do we say that someone or some entity is secular? Do religious, racial, ethnic, sex tolerance constitute secularism? The background of my question is this...I am from India and the concept of secularism in India, I thi...
