Re: Do not screen for dementia

There is already an existing test to test for dementia called the MMSE test From website http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Dementia/Pages/Diagnosis.aspx There are some questionnaires that can be used to help test your mental abilities and how severe your symptoms are. One widely used questionnaire is the...

Re: Time to rethink education?

I agree with Nick that online education is conceivably a big step forward and also potentially a workable solution. However, as someone who works in the publishing of online and hard copy educational materials, the devil is most definitely in the detail. In the TED video the woman refers to question...

Re: Do not screen for dementia

I disagree. My mother-in-law has dementia and it was only diagnosed in 2010. We suspected something was wrong back in 2006. If there had been a positive diagnosis back then we could have made some much better decisions about caring for my mother-in-law. The thing to remember about dementia is this -...

Some other interesting census facts from today's BBC website 42% of people in Norwich and Brighton say they have no religion, the highest level in England and Wales Muslims now make up 4.8% of the population of England and Wales So 25% of us say that we are not religious, as opposed to 59% of us who...

Jaywhat Garrison Keillor's 'Wobegone Boy' Great book, Jaywhat - I enjoyed it immensely. Your comment only serves to highlight a point that convinces me that to learn English as a second language must be a nightmare. There are just so many English words with at least two completely disparate meaning...

I really used to enjoy cross-country running when I was at school. By the time I got into the 3rd year at senior school I had got into the school team, and by the fourth year I used to run in the South Birmingham trials. Never finished better than 60th out of 150 though. All my friends hated cross-c...

Re: Modern economics

I agree that accountability is the key to fat cat salaries and bonuses. What makes me really angry at the moment is when I hear about all the claims being made against banks for the mis-selling of Payment Protection Insurance. Whilst I certainly agree that banks should be held accountable for their ...

Re: Absurdity

The conflict between trying to find the meaning of live and the impossibility of finding it is what Camus calls absurdity I agree with Dave. If there is a specific meaning to life, then I'm not really interested in what it is. Dawkins "The Selfish Gene" points out that genes themselves have an over...

Re: Why Obama Now

+1 Bill! I'm with you! If only we Brits were allowed to vote in the US elections. And why aren't we? Those colonials are our direct descendants. And the fact that they once elected George Bush shows that they don't completely understand the ramifications of their actions.

Re: Evidence (?) for Christ's Resurrection

I don't know why you guys get so worked up about what might have been said or done 2000 years ago regarding some possible existence of some scenario (the resurrection for example). I neither know nor care what was said or done by whom at the resurrection of Jesus (see Alan's link "The Easter Challan...

I can't bear the Today programme. All that news so early in the morning! I like to get my dose of news with Jeremy Vine at lunchtime.

I learned that the EU is planning to introduce legislation to force public limited companies throughout EU countries to have a minimum of 40% women on their boards of directors. Vince Cable plans to argue against this legislation, possibly invoking Britains right of veto to get round it. I find myse...
