Re: The Mail and the Devil

I have a question for you. If there is no evil and no good, and behaviour is a matter of relativity, what's the point of having the Declaration of Human Rights? There are no natural rights either. They are human inventions. The point of a declaration is, presumably, to act as an inspirarion for act...

Re: The Mail and the Devil

The label of evil takes away our responsibility to see what we might have done for these boys and this family prior to things getting the way they have. To label someone as evil merely allows us to deflect the light away from our own capacity for violence and our own cupability as a society. There ...

Re: E-Prime

Not heard of Ardbeg before. Laphroaig and its friend Lagavulin are good. Have you tried my favourite, Talisker? They make Ardbeg on Islay. I find it reminiscent of Laphroaig's peaty/iodine/medicinal flavours, but not nearly as pronounced, and with a deep honey sweetness. Others I have enjoyed over ...

Naah! Scottish haiku is like Japanese whisky!
:laughter:

I've never had Japanese whisky, but I'm led to believe that some of it is rather good. (Suntory?)

Ardbeg and Laphroaig for me please.

@ Ikiru

Couldn't Burns's poem be "haiku-ised" (punctuation etc) fairly easily and still be essentially the same?

And the journalists? Or is it only religious people who shouldn't take up the places?

ETA: Sorry, it's not about places, it's about "useful people".

Re: Haiti

Ridiculous. Each quack/preacher going over there is taking the place of a doctor. Each one of those infernal squarking bibles is taking a meal away from a child. If there is only one flight and there are only 100 seats on the flight, and 50 seats are taken by preachers, then only 50 seats are avail...

Re: E-Prime

I find one loss in e-prime: where "normal English" might use what appears as "e-prime" language as a deliberate form of understatement. Understatement in such cases implies the use of stronger "absolutist" language as a point of contrast. I commonly use this kind of understatement, sometimes sarcas...

@ Marian: Sorry for the delayed reply. I'll address a couple of points. Ok, you say that not liking something is the justification. What if I like murdering people? Does that make it ok? I suspect you are implying "does that make it morally good?" I've already said that I believe such language is su...
