Re: Spirituality in Humanism
If our deep knowing & understanding of the truth (What is right etc) doesen't come from God where does it come from? As others have alluded to we are (have evolved from being) a pack/tribe animal. Therefore our understanding is based upon that tribal instinct to survive and thrive - no God required...

Re: Campaign to stop Council prayers
I have to say that I am very surprised that this (prayers) still goes on. I assumed that it had stopped years ago!

Re: Views on Pantheism
I can totally relate to this, Mike, and I would say that its a very important and meaningful part of my life. However, to me, the "-theism" (god) seems redundant. I think its enough to simply exclaim a childlike "ah!" Anything else is too much. Ikiru from what you say I do not think that we are too...

Re: Views on Pantheism
I often feel that as well. However, I don't feel it when taking note of vomit on the pavement, cancer, tsunamis, the HIV virus, motor neurone disease, volcanoes, that sort of stuff. What I feel then is "Mother Nature? What a bitch!" Oh but Mother Nature is indeed a bitch. It is not all fluffy bunny...

PS Apologies for typos but I am posting from a mobile phone and correcting errors is almost impossible. I hope that my post was not too hard to read.

Re: Views on Pantheism
Just forthe record, this (me) Pantheist does not use the words God or Worship. Reverance though is something I do relate to. The best way that I can describe my Pantheism is this - Most days I walk my dogs along the beach or through the woods. (I am luvky enough to live in a beautiful area) When I t...

Re: Is spending shitloads of money on pet vet treatment immoral?
I'd gladly sell my house. I would not do the same to pay for medical treatment for a pet(which was the question I originally asked--more or less) My dogs are insured so hopefully it would never come to that, but if it did, I would sell the house for my dogs. No question whatsoever, they will always...

Re: Views on Pantheism
As a Pantheist myself could I just point out that we do not actually believe in "God" or "Gods" at all. The basic view of the Pantheist is that all is "divine" (Inverted commas deliberate) and therefore nature itself, though not God, is the basic driver of our existance. Most of us would consider ou...

Re: Is spending shitloads of money on pet vet treatment immoral?
Hey Mike, I wouldn't judge the whole forum by one thread ... Or, indeed, the entire humanist movement by one thread. I'm taken aback, to put it mildly, by your comment, Mike. You read one on-line thread involving a handful of participants not all of whom even describe themselves as humanists, you d...

Re: Is spending shitloads of money on pet vet treatment immoral?
Hey Mike! I disagreed as well, and think I posted about it earlier in the thread - but can't be arsed to check. I'm not a humanist, but this is a very thought provoking place to hang out, with some good discussions. Indeed Sir you did disagree as well. (I tried to quote your words too - but sadly m...

Re: Is spending shitloads of money on pet vet treatment immoral?
"We can all agree that people are more important than animals..."
Actually I cannot agree with that statement and, after reading through this thread, I feel that I may have made a mistake by becoming involved in this (Humanist) movement.
