Oh. So it's not actually "mild Persil" then? Time to visit the optician methinks.

Now I'm confused as well. Do we have any scientists here who can help?

All I knew was that because it is logarithmic, going from say, 100 to 101 decibels, was not an increase of 1% but much, much more.

Re: Haiti earthquake is a sign of 2012 destruction?

Hello, Haiti earthquake is a sign of 2012 destruction? If this true then what can we do? Well, it's not true. What can we do? Go and have a beer. Trivia question: Why are earthquakes measured as (say 6.1) on the Richter Scale, and not so many 'Richters'? Answer: Because it is a logarithm...

Having semi-retired my BMW for a bit after my "off" the other week makes me realise... that the 400cc Suzuki Burgman that I've had for the last year has been sadly under-rated by me. Automatic CVT transmission (= faster in town cornering coz no gears to think about) good weather protection huge stor...

The silly black all over thing is probably a good idea...........................If you're on a camel, in the desert, in a sandstorm. To be in charge of a potential killing machine dressed like that? The mind boggles, but she'll be OK as long as she doesn't blow her nose (eh how could she?) Have yo...

Damn right! Earthquakes, volcanoes: For believe me! — the secret for harvesting from existence the greatest fruitfulness and the greatest enjoyment is: to live dangerously! Build your cities on the slopes of Vesuvius! Send your ships into uncharted seas! Live at war with your peers and yourselves! B...

Ooo! I've just thought: religion may be an obstacle to integration, but it's pretty useful for differentiation!!!!!

Woo-hoo, I knew my Additional Maths O-level would come in useful one day.

Sorry... I'll get me coat.

Re: Religion As An Obstacle To Intergration

I remember discussing this sort of thing 20 years ago or so when I was Head of Religious Education at a secondary school. I suggested that it was impossible to have a "multicultural" society in which the values of Islam were treated with the same respect as secular ones. I think I used the example o...

Re: Once you've 'had' a deity .....

That has been one of my main arguments against fundies for decades, the bible clearly says that Saturday is the Sabbath, nowhere in the new testament does Jesus or anybody else change it to Sunday. Even the "infallible" Pope has it wrong. (has he never read a bible?) Not all Christians think of Sun...

Hundovir, Four Tet's Everything Ecstatic is a great album... Boards of Canada has put out some really good stuff. If you like Autechre, you might want to investigate Ryoji Ikeda (particularly his album Dataplex )-- its a bit extreme, but its fantastic, trippy music in its own weird way. Meant to re...

I wouldn't call my kid good or bad because he'd have no idea what I was talking about. Those words are meaningless without being defined. If you are going to define them for your kid, you might just as well go one step further and be specific with praise. Saying 'well done' or 'I'm proud of you' is...

Re: Monarchy and attitude towards monarchy

If I remember correctly, weren't the Sex Pistols big fans of the royals? There was that hit single "God Save the Queen" and wasn't a line in another of their songs "I wanna be in monarchy"? Yes, it was in the song 'monarchy in the UK' :exit: IIRC. Alright, now I understand the historical context of...

Yesterday I did an audition for "Dancing on Ice". Unfortunately, my motorcycle did not cooperate and we parted company at about 25mph. Fortunately I only have a sore right hip. Unfortunately the bike has lost a mirror, a footpeg and has sustained some scratching and general wear and tear. Fortunatel...
