Re: In or out?

But that Telegraph article is about migrants/refugees and not about the FoM of EU citizens. There is no chance of understanding the reasons why people vote for Brexit if the connections between concern over migration into the EU and concern about migration within it are still unobserved. Anyway, th...

Re: In or out?

Objectively, Freedom of Movement (FoM) may be an EU bridge too far. Mr Cameron warned that about the danger in 2014.. http://www.euractiv.com/section/uk-europe/news/cameron-eu-should-change-freedom-of-movement-rules-or-uk-will-exit/ and there was a Guardian article a few months after "The" EU refere...

Re: Can all men rape?

It should be noted that specific example is from Dawn newspaper. I haven't been able to verify with other sources. It doesn't mean rapes don't happen, or that that one didn't.

Can all men rape?

Articles like this help illustrate the question... http://freethinker.co.uk/2017/07/30/worshipping-an-evil-god/ We all deplore the totally dishonourable "honor" culture that leads to such criminal attacks on innocent women and girls but it also raises the question of how she was raped. That someone ...

Re: constitution uk

But what is the 'right' number and why? Why 325? Why not 650 or 1,000? Good people will make a bad system work and bad people will make a good system fail, but I would expect the leading 325 politicians to make better decisions than 1500 or so Commons and Lords who serve as they do. (325 is half of...

Re: In or out?

Coffee's post suggests there might be genuine grounds for concern over immigration. Some Remainers, on occasion, may appear to put that down to racism... “I’m not going to tell the world I voted leave,” said one 32-year-old man who wanted to remain anonymous for precisely that reason. “It’s a person...

Re: constitution uk

Entirely sympathise with Animist about another referendum. There's little that's wrong with the electoral commission as long as the adjustments are minor, at least. I would like to see the abolition of the House of Lords and the HofC should never have reached 600. Just my humble opinion. (I suggest ...

Re: In or out?

I think the UK needs to reject FoM and take the consequences, even if it damages our economy in the short and medium terms. How much damage is acceptable? Like most questions, I think it 'depends'. It isn't really the case that there's "the" point. There are a number of points to consider. If the E...

Re: In or out?

I do understand the difference between the SM and access to it and agree Alan has done a great job on that. ...The second thing which I think is bothering Zeff has been mentioned by Nick many times. It seems to be the fear that Britain would be penalised because, unlike a "third country" which has n...

Re: constitution uk

I haven't finished reading all this. The separation of powers is into three branches of government. There is usually a constitutional court of some kind but I don't think that is enough. I think four branches would be better, adding a Constitutional Assembly to the Executive, Legislative and Judicia...

Re: In or out?

The EU shouldn't wish to penalise the UK or any country for rejecting EU membership. The EU would be wrong to make trading or any other agreement less attractive to non-members simply to discourage other countries from exiting the EU. That wouldn't be fair to anyone, members or not and it wouldn't ...

Re: In or out?

Were the Brexiteers expecting reality to be different? Brexit: EU chief negotiator demolishes key aim of Tory strategy by ruling out 'frictionless trade' with Europe Only because he's a nasty spiteful bastard. Better to kick his arse than kiss it. Personal attacks don't help debate (or encourage hu...

Re: In or out?

From what I've read food exports to the UK will be hardest hit and there could be customs delays (up to 4 hours per lorry) at the border into the UK and again at ports like Dover. I think that is wildly wrong.... And then you go on to say delays may be due to having to hand over paperwork and incre...

Re: In or out?

A fresh [UK, not Eire] poll from Survation puts the result at 54 per cent for remaining if the referendum on membership of the EU took place today, versus 46 per cent voting to leave. That's a swing from the closely run result last year, when 51.9 per cent wanted to leave the EU and 48.1 per cent w...

Re: In or out?

I agree this is a very good point... Brexit threatens to consume the entire political life of this country (as witness the Queen's Speech and the clueless Boris interview posted above - nothing but Brexit filled the Speech); this is leaving aside the economic risks it brings, such as businesses leav...
