Scottish celebrations
Report to my Scottish friends: St. Andrew's night went off, as usual, at 7:30pm on the 29th in Milano. Smoked salmon (the true one), etc. and 10 years single malt Laphroaig + Glen Grant dignified the celebration. Scottish dances ensued. https://www.facebook.com/elio.pennisi p.s.: sorry, forgot the w...

Re: SYRIA
Crikey Moses, what are we to do? I jus' dunno. My only vague thought is that we should try to keep western ideas available, through the World Service, of course, but also through exports of western goods. Human nature seems to adopt fanaticism when someone "moves the cheese", but few civilisations ...

Re: Scottish Devolution
In my opinion a region that seeks separation from a country does not decide according to a +- £ 1,000-1,500 gain or loss in a year(at least I hope!). Difference in culture, administrative and political management style are most important weighs to be pondered upon.

Re: Scottish Devolution
Only a single aspect of the separation but I am still wondering what the outcome will be regarding the EU rule that a company must have its HQ in the country in which it has most employees. How many Scottish based companies have most of their customers, and therefore possibly the most employees, in...

Re: Scottish Devolution
I was thinking along the same line but I admit there is not straightforward answer because:
- Devolution: is your present status
- Enhanced Devolution: is what Conservatives have promised in case "NO" wins
- Independence: is what is sought
So, hem, what?

Re: Scottish Devolution
Unfortunately for that view, the leading party leaders in the forthcoming Euro-elections in France, the Netherlands and the UK are Ms Le Penn, Geert Wilders, and Nigel Farage. And Labour's desire for difference is leading them into Never-Never Land. (But that's for another thread.) At EU level they...

Re: Scottish Devolution
(Heaven knows what Labour policy is......) I think nowadays, in this madly globalized world, any party in government (Tories, Labour, LibDem, even UKIP.....) have not got much space for manoeuvre. Their main struggle today is to find ways to show alternative policies -when in a government. Quite an...

Re: Scottish Devolution
Either Scotland (as it is now) asks for a rating or, as an independent country, will be assessed a rating. Why would they need or want a rating? A rating assessed by S&P, Moody's, Fitch or similar (Dun & Dradstreet is not among the official ones) establishes the official economic reliability of a c...

Re: Scottish Devolution
Interesting, Gottard. Thanks. Of course, straging away from the topic under discussion, Euro-scepticism is even more pronounced in other member states, including, perhaps unexpectedly, France. Hmmm... I do suggest that we begin to distinguish between the EU (common trade area) and the Eurozone (con...
