Paris attacks: Pope Francis says freedom of speech has limits With video. My opinion: if we are allowed (free) to criticize/ridicule a politician (even the queen!) that we can watch and touch (queen not to be touched) why should we be not allowed to criticize an "hypothesis" whose existence we are ...

Great, thank you Alan H; your info allows me to maintain subscription to academic publications of OUP. After all, I live in "pseudo" free-speech Europe :D

Re: Good video links

I am not so negative about BBC balancing the view of speakers/spouters. It is good for the public to know about anyone views, even those of a childish-indoctrinated man's mind. Judgement is upon the listener! otoh, should BBC be expected to select speakers then there I would see a bias. The BBC cle...

Yes, have available and merged with his original memory.

:D I suspect they knew his views - whether they knew the specifics of what he spouted - and had him on to provide 'balance'. If this is the case, then I see this as simply playing to the ratings. If this is the case, I see no societal benefit from it - it's all just a bit like Prime Minister's quest...

Re: Uploading the mind from the brain to a computer

If it was possible to upload your mind from your brain into a computer would you do it? I definitely would! Yes, I could pass the memory on to my son (on the premise that it would also be possible to download it back to the human being). Read as-is, Gottard, you seem to be saying that your s...

This morning (1st Jan.) I woke up with a question: shouldn't each new year start on the winter solstice for us Humanists?
However, I concede it would be challenging considering that we are a minority.

Ah, but . . . Surely, Goddard, the computer may be a tabla rasta with no self-consciousness but all the potential for activation by the incoming mind. But that opens a whole new vat of sphagetti! Just how does one connect the "donor" brain to the computer and what form does that memory have to be c...

Re: Uploading the mind from the brain to a computer

Will I still be navigating on this planet when the transposition will be possible, I wonder. I wonder what it would feel like to be conscious inside a computer. Once a human being's memory is transposed to a neuro-active computer, consciousness assumes two separate identities: the human's one and t...
