Re: Dawkins and Hitchins planning to arrest the Pope!

Cheers all. Here's the Facebook event. The police have given us an area and put me in charge of it :s. Hopefully nothing'll go wrong or one of you'll have to come and bail me out. The area's not huge so I'm not so worried about numbers just now, but these kinds of contacts are always useful to have,...

Re: Dawkins and Hitchins planning to arrest the Pope!

I called the police today, they told me to call the council, then they told me to call the police, etc etc. In the end I got through to the police guy in charge of the event and he's going to come and visit me at work tomorrow to discuss it. After that I'll make a facebook event and get publicising....

Re: Dawkins and Hitchins planning to arrest the Pope!

My eldest, at uni in Edinburgh, has been told that all classes are cancelled for his popeiness's visit next month. She's incensed, and has been looking for a group to protest with on the day. Neither of us can find anything, so does anyone know of any protest the pope gatherings in Edinburgh? Neith...

Yeah, this one's much simpler. Crispian's one would be much better as a poster.

Re: The doctor that believes

So, how far are we from acknowledging that our minds do influence our bodies? Or are there any other explanations for what a placebo is? Sure, in the same way that thinking about food makes you salivate, or thinking about nits makes your head get itchy. That's not surprising, seeing as (as has been...

Re: The doctor that believes

Found it.

Here's a link to the paper, and here's a link to the Bad Science Post I first saw it in. As Ben says, it's a small sample size and there's no control group, but worth bearing in mind.

Re: The doctor that believes

A placebo is no good if you know that's what it is. That's not quite true apparently. I remember reading a fairly small paper which showed that patients who were told something like 'we're going to give you a placebo. A placebo is a pill which contains no medicine and has no effect on your body, bu...

Re: Humanism, religion and charity

I believe the HSS Edinburgh group once asked the Charities Commission how many charities were religious in nature, and IIRC it was under 25%.

Re: Why time travel may not be possible

I was inspired for this by a cartoon I saw somewhere, but I can't find it now. Say you have a time machine and desire to go back (or forward) to another time. You set the time machine for say, 6 months in the past. Press the big red Go button and POP!, you are in space and immediately explode into ...

Re: Scottish Churches

Cheers LL, the differences are trivial, as usual.

IIRC the Christian Union invited David Robinson to speak at our uni, and wanted us to find someone of a similarly high profile to debate him. We replied that we didn't know anyone that ignorant.

Scottish Churches

I was reading around this morning and noticed this story in the Herald. It's crap but that's not what this thread's about. I looked up the Free Presbyterian Church thinking they were the Wee Frees but apparently they're the Wee Wee Frees, and I got a bit confused. Having grown up near Liverpool, the...

Re: Unbelievable - Singh case

Whilst we're on the topic of legal challenges to woo, anyone near Edinburgh may be interested that Simon Singh will be speaking tonight at 6pm at the Banshee Labyrinth on Niddry Street. It's all part of the Edinburgh Skeptics' Fringe of Reason event which is happening every day, same time and place ...

Re: atheism versus agnosticism

To my mind Atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist (without theism) Whereas Agnosticism means without knowledge (you don't know). This is a point I often make in discussion. It is possible to be an atheistic agnostic or a theistic agnostic (or to waver between the two). Howev...

Re: a new argument against the cosmological proof for God?

Not everything necessarily has a cause. There are (apparently) virtual particles which appear and disappear in a vacuum, with no cause. But that's not why the cosmological argument (I refuse to call it a proof, it's only a proof in the same way that a homeopathic one is) is so terrible. The reason i...

Re: Humanist groups

And of course if you're in Scotland you can find groups via the HSS . I'll have to try and get in touch with people at some other Scottish unis. In September I'll be taking up the Scottish Regional Representative role with the AHS, and I really want to see if we can't get a couple more groups up. In...

Re: Is Jewish an ethnic group?

Actually it's interesting, the Jewish religion is probably one of the last tribal religions remaining, being as it was the religion of the Israelites. Most religions these days are completely belief-based, and they'll take converts from anywhere, but Judaism has always been different, even now it is...
