Re: Labour leadership election
The only hope for Labour is that the Tories nasty streak will make them implode. They are already starting to do it but in the early days of a new parliament they can get away with it. The trouble is that we need an effective opposition to hammer home the worst excesses of the Tories. We haven't got...

Re: The future of Government (if any)
I don't think I ever used the date on the disc as a reminder, I relied on the letter from the DVLA. Yeah, but you probably knew it was coming - it could have been an unconscious reminder. Yes, it's due early in the new year. But I also buy TV licence and a fishing licence - I don't need a disc to r...

Re: Hifi firms have been ripping me off
I think my ears are shot! Too many loud punk concerts and the like. I cannot tell good hi-fi from average hi-fi from top of the range hi-fi; so I believe that if I buy a middle of the range system it'll be good enough for me. To be honest much of the music I like is better sounding 'raw'. I can't im...

Re: The future of education (if any)
The issue becomes exaggerated because, as you have just described, the school begins to get a reputation of being a "good school". This then attracts the pushy middle class parents who want their kids to go there. These kids tend to have access to books and education at home and therefore the school...

Re: The future of education (if any)
Going to have to say that since the local secondary became an academy the public behaviour of the kids has improved considerably. I will admit that their new uniforms and the mission statement give it something of the air of a 1950s high school. Is this a bad thing? My main concern is that the loca...

I also think that one of the key choices is "How to spend your time".
I don't switch energy users or go to different shops to get cheaper foods because time is more precious and as long as I feel I'm getting an 'ok' deal I'll settle for that.

Re: Migrants via the Tunnel
The terrible death toll in the Med over recent years is a price migrants pay for Western anti-immigrant policies. It's surely the price they pay for the tyranny in their homelands. Solve that, and everything changes. Ignore it and nothing does. I've been saying this in my last few posts! BUT we hav...

Re: Migrants via the Tunnel
I do not know what the short term solution is.
Long term it has to be to ensure that the countries that they are currently leaving are no longer basket cases or involved in a war. That means better targeted aid and improved diplomacy. Easy to say, very difficult to do.

Re: The future of Israel
A tired old trick, beloved of simplistic demagogues everywhere. "If you criticise our favoured political grouping, (in this case, the Israeli state machine,) you are attacking all members of the social grouping they claim to represent. (in this case, all Jews.)" Complete rubbish, of course, but it ...

Re: Migrants via the Tunnel
The only real solution to this problem lies in Africa. Unfortunately the problem is so complex no viable solution is possible. At the same time I do not see that Europe can absorb an endless sream of "refugees". Those whose life is under threat should have some priority but I am not so sure about t...

Re: Save the BBC!
Whoever is in Government wants to control the BBC, the Tories do it by threatening and culling; Labour by calling its reporting into question. (The Hutton Enquiry and Alistair Campbell) I find it amazing that the BBC is right wing when the Labour Party is in control and left wing when the Tories ar...
