Re: Film criticism and recommendation

May I suggest "The Time Travellers Wife"? Both sci-fi and a little bit chick-lit, the film is spellbinding from beginning to end. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Re: Help with ebook please

I have over 200 e-books in .mobi format which I'd be happy to send to you if you fancied any of them. All are guaranteed virus-free. Would you like a list of the titles? I have "The Geek Manifesto" by Mark Henderson as a starter. If .mobi files won't work on a Sony reader I can convert them to .epub...

Well, when I use the word "solid" I'm using it loosely...!

Surely yoghurt is solid at some point...

Re: Something Wonderful Happened Today....

Something wonderful happened to us yesterday - we had our tea at our daughter's house with little Jessica joining us at the table. It was the first time I'd seen her eat solid food!

Re: David Bowie's Teeth

Getreal, have played Bowie's The Next Day about 14 times now and it is starting to grow on me. Some of the tracks are awful, but others transport me back to 1973 when I'd just got home and placed the vinyl gently on my record player, having just purchased Aladdin Sane. Am enjoying "The Stars (are ou...

Re: Other fora

Like Dave, I have been experimenting with other fora (forums). I joined Google plus six months ago and in January they introduced the option to start up "communities" within the site. Some of these communities have grown extremely large over the last two months. I'm a member of three different athei...

Re: The future of Government (if any)

What about the overhaul of the CSA? I see that as good policy. The old CSA was toothless and unable to satisfactorily extract money from absent fathers, meaning that men could literally have their cake and eat it, disappearing just when the child needed some form of income to support it. This left t...

Re: The place of power in politics.

Pantodragon, I agree with the main thrust of your argument. There does remain however, in a democracy, the sticky situation that at some point the leader must pretend to like/listen to his subjects as he needs them to retain or regain power. In ancient Athens that would only be the wealthy men, but ...

Re: The future of Government (if any)

Oh dear. I see your incessant socialism hasn't disappeared while I've been away. Your stance seems to be very partisan. Whilst I like to try and recognise good policy and bad policy in both Tory and Labour governments over the last 30 years ( I always agreed with Gordon Brown's decision to take the ...

bird

I have just seen (and managed to take a photo of) this bird eating seeds from our bird table in the back garden. I have never seen any bird like it before, especially not round here. We usually get robins, blackbirds, blue tits and wood pigeons eating at the bird table. The bird is roughly the same ...

Re: Just a Joke

A man is stumbling through the woods totally drunk when he comes upon a preacher baptizing people in the river. He proceeds to walk into the water and subsequently bumps into the preacher. The preacher turns around and is almost overcome by the smell of alcohol, whereupon he asks the drunk, "Are you...

Re: 'cry it out' sleep training for babies causes brain dama

Nor me, but Demi is right. As you know my daughter had a baby in October (my beautiful granddaughter, Jessica) and the health visitor has kept banging on about how important it is that Jessica sleep in the same room as my daughter for the first six months of her life. Seems crazy to me but who am I ...

Re: 'cry it out' sleep training for babies causes brain dama

We did the same with our two, Demi. The only difference being we put them in their own room at night right from day one. My wife would only have to hear them making 'hungry' noises and she'd be in there like a flash. Otherwise we would let them cry for a bit and then they'd go off to sleep. We would...
