Re: Pope approves of condoms

Thing is, he's only approved their use in such a ridiculous scenario. Really, how many Catholics are male prostitutes?

Re: Census

Yes, I have signed the pledge. However, I do have concerns about this statement from the FAQ (my bolding): Even if you tick the ‘Other’ box and write in ‘Humanist’ you will be counted in the ‘No Religion’ category for the top-line results. However, in more detailed analysis, writing in ‘Humanist’ ma...

Re: Starting a Humanist Society at college?

Perhaps you need to tell people what humanism is. I think many people are humanists without realising.

Re: having a multiple partners

I have a friend who is "poly" and has multiple partners. He seems to have one main girlfriend, and then others, who may all have other partners as well. They are completely open and honest about other partners and it seems to work for them. They have very strict rules about safe sex. My friend is he...

Re: Do you question the History that you are taught?

When I learned History in secondary school (10-15 years ago) there was a lot of emphasis on examining sources and not taking them at face value, but examining their possible biases. In a very basic example, you could say that a painting may not be accurate because the painter may have painted things...

Re: Dog Food

I don't keep dogs, but I do keep cats, and there are similar issues with cat foods, which contain all manner of ingredients that appeal to humans but have absolutely no nutritional value to cats. If you pump cat food full of grain to bulk it out and fill your cat's stomach up, your cat will feel con...

Re: living the twin's life

I think all sets of twins will be different. Some remain extremely close. Others hate each other. Most probably have a relationship rather like normal siblings. I think sibling rivalry can be an issue, partly because they are inevitably the same age, but also because they will be striving to form th...

Re: Child adoption

I have a friend who adopted a child. Her son was living with her for six years before the adoption was finalised when he was already nine years old. She told me that this time frame was typical. This was in the UK just a couple of years ago.

Re: The future for the human race. Where we will end up?

Take the issue of race. It seems logical to me that the longer time goes on, the longer civilisation continues, more and more interracial mixing will take place to a point where we will all be the same. The only way to prevent that happening would be to purposefully and successfully keep all races ...

Re: Mental illness, prejudice, free will, crime, etc.

I think a lot of people feel uncomfortable with thinking that people like Moat were not mad, because that means that anyone of us could turn round and go on a shooting spree. It offers comfort to think he must be mad, because that means he wasn't really human, and so the people we know and see every...

Re: Humanist groups

I don't think we share "beliefs" Rather; we share the view that you can live a good life without "belief" in the supernatural. If you think Humanism is a belief system then I think you need to do a bit more reading on the subject. I am not a linguistics expert, but I did not mean to imply anything ...

Humanist groups

Since first learning about Humanism a couple of months ago, I have discovered a couple of humanist groups near to me which I am consindering going to. I just wondered if anyone else who attends a group could tell me a little bit about the kinds of things they do. The groups I am looking at seem to h...

Re: How does a life come to manifest?

I don't know very much about this, but it's certainly a very interesting question! Proteins are made up of long strings of amino acids, and the way the are made and respond to each other affects the shapes they form into. If there is a mistake and an amino acid gets into the wrong place, the protein...

Re: Dogs are cruel, Cats are cool

I had an unpleasant shouting match yesterday with a group of people walking their large slavering dogs. The dogs came jumping up at us and we were faced with six stupidly grinning faces and words like 'They won't hurt you.' I cannot repeat what I shouted or what they replied. I walked away shaking....
