Re: Religiosity vs intelligence etc
We cannot be 100% sure that pixies (of the fairy variety) don't exist but I refuse to give the slightest credence to the notion that uncertainty in this case is a reasonable position to take and so it would seem disingenuous of me to say that I am anything other than 100% sure that they don't exist....

Re: Apportioning Blame
My short answer is that I don't know but I think it's something to do with the effect that 18 years of Thatcherism had on our culture and collective thinking. We just don't think the same as we used to. I'm not sure either. Actually, I'm not even sure I understand the question (sorry canary11!). Ho...

Re: TV's The Apprentice
Although I can't seem to stop myself from watching The Apprentice I really wouldn't want to spend more than 5 minutes in the company of any of the competitors. The world they live in is a world that is truly antithetical to my own and incompatible with how I think and live. I find it difficult to id...

Re: How do you back up your data?
I use Karen's Replicator to backup important folder content, duplicating the folders on an external hard drive. I also do backups of some things (photos, for example) on DVD for extra security. I do these things fairly often but probably not often enough. However, I also run (on my desktop PC - not ...

Have a good weekend, everyone.

Re: Not just 'happy humans'?
I think none of this is a surprise to anyone who has invested a little thought in it. The old view that animals are just biological machines devoid of feelings, a la Descarte, has long since been thrown in the dump where it belongs. Yet, despite all the advancement of knowledge, through science and ...

Re: Did the earth move for you?
My wife and I certainly felt the quake here in Lancashire. We were both sat downstairs and very much awake at the time. We felt a definite shaking and bumping and several unidentified items in the room were rattling and jingling for several seconds. We knew immediately that we'd just experienced an ...

Re: The new insomniacs' thread
The 17 years of permanent night shifts were done in two large mental hospitals. When I worked for "Mothers Pride" 1978/1982, I used to deliver bread to two institutions, one I suppose (Dovenby hall) could be called "for people with learning difficulties"... ...I used to dread going to these places ...

Re: The new insomniacs' thread
Good link, Mick, thanks. May I ask what your job is? Hi Firebrand. My 27 years of shift work have all been with the NHS. I work supporting people with severe learning disabilities. For the last 10 years that's been in a local community home and it involves working both day shifts and night shifts (...

This may be of interest to all insomniacs here, amongst whom I certainly include myself, though I personally would be reluctant to indulge in an ice bath before bed. :supershock: 5 steps to hacking your sleep . I worked permanent night shifts for 17 years and have done shift work for 27 years. It's ...

By the way, Ted, I thought your response to the New Statesman article was a good one; it seems to have ruffled a few feathers too. As Lance-Corporal Jack Jones might have said, "The don't like it up 'em".

Re: Views on living life without religion
This is a great quote from Bill Bryson's book "A short history of nearly everything" The bad news is that atoms are fickle and their time of devotion is fleeting- fleeting indeed. Even a long human life adds up to only about 650,000 hours. And when that modest milestone flashes into view, or at som...

Re: Crucifixion
I have never really been able to get my head around what is meant by, "Jesus died for our sins". It's one of those phrases that Christians have absorbed during their brainwashing, never really thinking too much about what it means and they tend to become uncomfortable and agitated if asked to explai...
