is from The Hours. Very classy novel, now used to help teach creative writing, and a clever film.jamesjones950 wrote:"Someone has to die in order that the rest of us should value life more."

Re: Voting Rights for prisoners
Sorry, late into the discussion. I voted yes (they should all vote) and yes (we should comply with the ruling). The main reason people are against this seems to me to be because they think that prison should be a punishment and that any right or luxury should be removed. Prisoners will come out at s...

Remember Gordon Gekko in Wall Street : Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures, the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge, has marked the upward surge ...

Re: Are there any moral facts?
I have voted No. In my opinion, none of this is absolute and existing independently of humans and society. It is all a social construction. We as a human society can decide what we want to do. There are no absolute rules, even the Golden Rule. We can classify our constructed rule sets as religious m...

Canal towpaths are much nicer. Although the verbal abuse from anglers (on the canals) and extreme cyclists (on the disused railway lines) is of a comparable nature, only the cyclists can kill you when they run you down.

Scoggy, Assuming that your child attends a regular state school, not a faith school. If you can get a copy, it might be worth looking at the local Agreed Syllabus for RE, which is prepared by the local SACRE. This will set out for KS1 and KS2 the main topics and approaches that are used with RE teac...

Re: Minimum Pricing on alcohol
I seem to be in the minority here in that I don't think excessive taxation or pricing of these items is sensible. I take a libertarian Darwinist view. If people want to kill themselves, fine. Let's provide a bit more education on the risks, and then remove the free liver transplants, plastic surgery...

Re: Remembrance Day
In Milton Keynes the local Humanists attend the event at the local war memorial alongside the religions, councillors, British Legion, Scouts and Guides etc. and lay a wreath just like the other groups. This is partly to make the point that non-theists have feelings about war and its victims too, and...

The BHA is apparently looking at "humanist chaplains" at the moment, and there is also an initiative in Leeds to develop a network (against the wishes of the BHA, so it would seem).

Re: Sunrise Conference 2010
There seems to be a big disagreement brewing between the organisers of this event and the BHA. Local BHA affiliated groups have been emailed by BHA about the event, and in particular raising concerns about the value of the "humanist chaplain" training and proposed network of such "chaplains". I have...

Re: Electric Fluence Machines
Sorry I didn't catch this discussion earlier - been away from the internet in East Fife for a holiday. The main machine discussed seems to be a coil-based voltage generator. This would generate a few volts at a few milliamps from the blue motor-like device, but it would then be stepped up in a trans...

Re: E-books
Life expectancy of most modern technology appears to be classifiable by two main parameters: (1) how long it takes before a better version of what you currently have is available [in computers this is in the region of two months, with mobile phones about the same], (2) how long the manufacturer will...

Re: Education in Oldham
Apparently some time ago the schools in the area were more mixed, but over time the two communities geographically re-located themselves to create two distinct areas of Oldham, one predominantly Asian and the other predominantly "white". This skewed the intakes of the local schools. Unless these geo...

Re: What temperature does water freeze and boil at?
What was missing from all this material was that the triple point is defined in terms of both temperature and pressure (partial pressure in the case of water vapour). At 1 atmosphere pressure you will find it difficult to get to the triple point, which can only be achieved at the right partial press...

Re: How does a life come to manifest?
It's all the processes of chemistry. There is no "spark" or "intelligence" in the process. Nothing "decides" anything. The chemical systems of life are very complex and inefficient, and a lot of energy and materials are used up in the process.
