Re: Humanist Charitable Organisations

On this front (charitable work, "good work") the student Humanist Society at the Uni of Edinburgh runs Humanist Blood Drives every 3 months. :D It is one way to answer the question: "If you don't believe in God, then why would you do anything altruistic/good? Atheists do not feel any motivation to h...

Re: ‘Chaplaincy & the non-religious’

Some of us are fighting a similar battle in Scotland. Your event seems very interesting and I would like to ask whether there will be some sort of summary or report of the main points for those of us too far to attend. Will an article about the event/debate be published anywhere? or will the whole t...

How many unexplained questions deal with the Mind/Brain?

It is a pleasure to see that most unsatisfactorily (auch) explained questions deal with events that Neuroscience is learining about. Did I mention that I am a Neuroscientist? :D I love these enigmas and my colleagues and I enjoy reading about them in magazines like Scientific American Mind. http://w...

Monism is cooler that it seems

To a brain scientist like myself monism is a "doohh!". However, the materialistic alternative is even cooler than most people realize. So, yes, the mind is a product of the nervous system and only the nervous system. But, what is in the nervous system that makes the mind? The atoms and molecules in ...

Wheels - I would love to do something more 'active' and have toyed with the idea of setting up some kind of Humanist group here at the Uni to act as a balance to the number of 'faith' groups that there are. However between work, study and feeding my boy aka - "the bottomless pit", I don't know that...
