Re: Halal food

Johann Hari: The religious excuse for barbarity Just read this link - well, what I could of it as the link keeps crashing. Seems that the RSPCA (and others) are concerned that Kosher and Halal "stunning" is not "stunning" as we in the west would know it. Halal stunning uses a much lower "shock" so ...

Re: Halal food

Jaywhat said A visit to a halal slaughter house explained that animals are stunned. I was surprised as I understood that to be 'real' halal it must not be stunned. I thought that too but evidently not. On Radio 4 the other day they interviewed a New Zealand lamb producer who informed us that ALL New...

Re: Britrish Schools Islamic Rules - Panorama documentary

I found the programme a little concerning but I also found myself sceptical of some of the findings. Panorama is made by journalists and journalists do like a story don't they? That said, Islamic (and indeed Christian) extremism is a reality that we need to guard against. My overwhelming feeling tho...

Re: Remembrance Day

As a retired serviceman November 11th is a day that I always want to remember and always want to be a part of, but the religious overtones really do make me feel uncomfortable. I for one would welcome a non-religious approach or, maybe as a compromise, I could go with an all inclusive approach.

On a slight side note can I share this with you all -

Dog biscuits, doggy treats, chews, tennis balls and k9 toys urgently required as gifts for RAF Police and Military Working Dogs currently serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. No cash wanted - just treats and toys.

To help or donate PM me

Thank you

Re: Hawking's new book says creator redundant

We have a devout (or should I say fanatical) Anglican where I work. Yesterday a workmate relayed the Hawking's news to her. Her response was astonishing -

"That explains why he is in a wheelchair then!"

Re: Do animals have rights?

For me, both professionally and personally, animal welfare is a major issue. I feel very strongly that we, as the supposedly most intelligent species, have a duty to care for our animal cousins. This to me means that we do not treat with cruelty, we do not treat with indifference. That we do treat w...

Re: Humanism, religion and charity

I work with a very well known animal charity. The shelter at which I work has a dozen or so staff who I am proud to call my friends. None of them are religious but they are all darned fine men and women who are trying, often against all odds, to do some right in the world. The church has no monopoly...

Re: Dogs are cruel, Cats are cool

As some of you may have deduced I work for an animal rescue charity and Staffies are certainly presenting us with a challange at the moment. The animal centre that I work in is currently at full stretch dog and cat wise. Far and away the most common breed that comes to us is the Staffie. This is not...

Re: War and Humanism

In the UK we pay for our "free schools, welfare state & clean water" actually, we pay rather a lot for these things.

Re: War and Humanism

I served in the UK military for twenty-two years so it will probably surprise you when I say that, broadly speaking, I am anti-war. However, there are (IMHO) occasions when war is the lesser of the two evils. Sometimes, however unpallatable it may seem, you have to fight in order to avoid something ...

Re: Is spending shitloads of money on pet vet treatment immoral?

I will own up to spending a few hundred pounds a year on pet insurance and vet bills for our dog, and if she needed expensive treatment that wasn't covered by insurance, it is quite probable that we would pay it (unless the treatment was risky and involved putting her through a lot of pain and we d...

Re: When did Jesus develop a halo?

Edited to ask,
Where was "Jesus" and what was he doing between the age of 12 and 30?

If he was anything like my teenagers he was probably being a right royal pain in the arse!
