Re: The original book thread

You can read an extract from the first chapter of The Islamist here. I read it when it first came out and found it gripping. I'm sorry it didn't win the Orwell prize - it was on the shortlist but the shortlist looked extremely strong and I am now reading the winner, Palestinian Walks: Notes on a Van...

Re: Cheddar Gorge 5

You transposed two of the words, PH, but thanks for bothering! I am never quite sure how the worst jazz pianist in Christendom became such a great smiling angel as he appears to be. I am somewhat perplexed by the fact that there are no Christians here. Perhaps they think they shouldn't have to be do...

Good job you're not applying for a job with the YMCA then. :D

Was that a drive-by or are you going to come back and engage some more?

Re: Humanist ceremonies

That sounds very appropriate thing to do in the circumstances.

I suppose my question is really 'should humanist ceremonies include religious content?' Jaywhat's example sounds like a good argument for not proscribing it entirely.

Re: Humanism and Nationalism

I don't consciously feel proud to be British because it's something I can't help but I do feel pleased to see GB doing well in the medals tables.

:puzzled:

Even more puzzling....I do feel ashamed to be British when British governments do terrible things.

Re: Should parents have the right to refuse...

*tentatively steps into thread* The focus is 'should parents have the right to refuse vaccines', as the thread. And I think that my link to Sense in Science (you make no mention of it) regarding compulsory vaccines is perhaps a good closure to this thread. Anna, I think it's true to say that, since...

At the weekend. Now that I'm in Australia, I'm phoning my parents more frequently than when I was in the same country as them.

And me. I did the second quiz, which is even stupider, and was told I'm bound for the 7th circle of Hell. The Violent: You were either violent against people and property, and are now standing in a river of boiling blood. Or, you were a suicide who is now made into a tree that cannot speak unless br...

Both. I'd been planning to take a sabbatical for some time and when I got the chance to come over to do some work in Australia, I took the opportunity to extend my stay for a while and see a bit of the country.
